Rest in Peace. The Funeral for Cecil Payne, better known as Spicey to parishioners at St. Hugh and St. Edmund will be held at the church on Saturday Feb. 2 at 11am. There will be viewing from 10 to 10:45am. Commital follows the service.

Murphy's Law...at least it seemed that way last week. The coldest morning of the winter came last Sunday and no-one came for our early service apart Lay Reader Jean Franze and Father Bob Bettson. The later 11am service had about 30 hardy souls, and rather than preach on joyful giving, Fr. Bob preached on the wedding at Cana, and the joy we can find in following Jesus. So this Sunday we try again.

One of the most frequently mentioned topics in the Bible is money, and the use of it. Yet it isn't easy to talk about money in church. St. Hugh and St. Edmund is launching a program called "Joyful Giving" this Sunday, January 20, as the parish moves further into its fifth decade, and welcomes the Rev'd Jason Prisley as its new priest. Encouraging gifts of all kinds, time, talent and money are crucial to our continued ministry in Malton.

We have a new Diocesan Bishop. Andrew Asbil was installed as the 12th Bishop of Toronto last Sunday at St. James Cathedral. Father Bob Bettson, interim priest in charge at St. Hugh and St. Edmund was part of the procession of clergy. Father Bob first served with Bishop Asbil as an intern when Andrew was a parish priest at Church of the Incarnation Oakville in 2000.

This Sunday we Celebrate the Baptism of the Lord by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. We renew our Baptismal vows and recall the beginning of the ministry of Jesus in the wilderness. Services at 9:30 and 11 in English and 2pm in Punjabi. Our Primate Fred's reflections on this feast:

St. Hugh and St. Edmund was fortunate to welcome Bishop Peter Fenty, our former honourary assistant, to celebrate and preach on Advent 4. It was a joyful reunion for many parishioners including Edna Downes, pictured here with the Bishop. Now on to Bethlehem with two services tonight, family communion at 7pm and the traditional midnight Mass at 11pm with carol singing beginning at 10:30pm.

We welcome our former honourary assistant The Right Rev'd Peter Fenty, area Bishop for York Simcoe, as guest preacher and celebrant on the fourth Sunday of Advent December 23 at 11am for a service of Holy Baptism and Communion. Christmas eve services at 7pm and 10:30pm. Christmas Day at 10am.

Last Sunday we had members of the youth and Sunday school present a Christmas pageant. On this Sunday December 16 we will do lots of singing as we follow the traditional nine lessons and Carol's at our 11am service.

Advent begins at St. Hugh and St. Edmund. Next Saturday December 8 at 7:30 pm there will be a Youth Concert. On Sunday December 9 the annual Sunday School pageant will take the place of sermon time.
