St. John's Dixie 21.05.2022

We'd love to have you join us for worship this morning! If you can't make it here in person, please join our livestream, beginning shortly before 10am. We're delighted to welcome back the Rev Susanne McKim.

St. John's Dixie 15.05.2022

We are overwhelmed with joy to announce the arrival of The Rev. Susanne McKim as our interim priest for the month of May. She brings a sense of joy and delight to her ministry. You can meet her on our 10am live stream, or in person at our 8am or 10am worship on Sunday morning. If you'd like to know a little about her ahead of time, here is some of what she's managed to get done: While working towards her M. Div. degree, the Rev. Susanne McKim did field work and training inter...nships at the Church of the Ascension, Don Mills and the Church of the Messiah, Avenue Road. After graduating in 2005, she worked at the Church of St. Augustine of Canterbury, Leaside, as Pastoral Assistant. She was ordained to the priesthood in the Diocese of Toronto on the Feast of the Epiphany in 2008 at All Saints Kingsway where she served as a Curate, and mentored a talented group of young actors in many sanctuary productions called High Drama at All Saints. She also developed a monthly community service called Around the Table aimed at children which started with breakfast and included musical prayers, an interactive, dramatic sermon and a dance to the holy table for communion. Following her curacy, Rev. Susanne was appointed as Incumbent of the two-point Parish of Georgina on Lake Simcoe where she served for five years, during which time she facilitated the amalgamation of St. James, Sutton and St. George’s, Jackson’s Point. During that time, she called on the members and leaders of other denominations in the area to come together to support the very large ‘invisible’ group of financially struggling community members in Georgina, which resulted in the Mayor providing an abandoned school for development into what is now called The Hub, which houses the Georgina Food Pantry, a skate park for the youth, and many services and educational opportunities to help those in need. After five wonderful years in Georgina, she was invited to become Incumbent at Trinity, Port Credit, where she facilitated an amalgamation between that parish and St. Paul, Lorne Park and the two parishes are now known as Trinity-St. Paul, Port Credit. Trinity-St. Paul was known for its outreach to the senior community, as they provided Jazz Afternoons and an event called Lunch and a Movie where an elegant luncheon was served by the parishioners, after which the guests stayed to watch a movie. This parish is also known for its wonderful story of having given sanctuary and legal assistance to a refugee from Nigeria, who now lives in the community as a Canadian citizen. Susanne has two wonderful adult daughters who live and work in the city. Since her recent retirement, she has returned to her passion of singing with a band. She is also writing a collection of short stories reflections and nostalgia which she hopes will be read at least by her daughters and maybe even some of her cousins!

Wondering with Simon Cat about which was his favourite story we shared during Lent. He's narrowed it down to these three. Janice Kretchman will share more stories in person at St. John's tomorrow. Videos will be the first Sunday of each month, plus occasional special events.

Reign of Christ Sunday. No soprano this week and there’s no trumpet this year - but we do have a determined priest tenor, a pianist with a love of Johnny Cash and an alto who plays the ukulele Never a dull moment St. John’s Dixie.

LOCKDOWN AND CHURCH (please see newsletter emailed to parishioners Nov 21st for more information) As you’re aware, Peel Region and the city of Toronto have been placed under a 28 day lockdown, beginning Mon, Nov 21st, to try and halt the spread of Covid. This means that the church must be closed to physical worship again until Dec 21st. The church will remain closed to physical worship, throughout December, reopening (if circumstances allow) on Sunday, January 3rd.... I realize this means there will not be a physical service for Christmas. Closing for Christmas is not a decision we make happily or lightly. However, we won’t know until a few days before if we’re even able to re-open and its simply not feasible to organize and plan for a service (and reserved seating) with so little notice. Encouraging groups to gather immediately after lockdown and putting pressure on parishioners to take the risk aren’t things I wish to do. Online services will still be recorded and offered on our YouTube channel, however the diocese has also increased restrictions, even on recording teams. After this Sunday (Nov 22), clergy and musicians must wear masks for recording and live-streaming, even when the congregation isn’t present. As I record my sermon separately on my own, I will be able to preach the sermon without a mask, however singers will have to be masked for hymns any part of the liturgy we do together. We are looking into using software that allows us to record different musicians at home and blend their voices together, however this isn’t an easy process and may not work for us. We ask for your understanding if the quality of the online services is negatively affected. We will continue to offer services each Sunday thought Advent, posted at our usual time of 7am, Sunday mornings. I will also be offering a mid-week Advent Vespers service online, containing short prayers, a hymn and brief reflection. These will be available on our YouTube channel by 6pm on Wednesday Dec 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd. The theme this year will be Fear Not the Message of God to Israel, to Mary, to Joseph and to the ShepherdsGod’s Message to Us. There will be two Christmas services offered online a Family Service (with a focus on being child friendly, so families can watch together) and a Eucharist Service with Sermon. Both will have music and carols. And both will be posted on our YouTube channel, on Christmas Eve by 4pm. Feel free to watch one Christmas Eve and the other Christmas Day! (or just pick onethat’s ok too). "All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well" - Julian of Norwich, 14 C

"What you do to these, the least of these, who are my family, you do also to me." (from this Sunday's Gospel: Matthew 25: 31-46) As a woman commented at our zoom Bible Study on Tuesday, sometimes "the least of these" are not always those "with the least" but those we may not even see because they are "least like us". One way we care for others and "live in the Kingdom" that Christ came to initiate is by creating spaces where all are safe, all are recognized, all are welcome...d and affirmed. I am so very grateful to be part of a community that seeks to do this. Thank you St. John’s - Daniel +
