Pilot Project for Body Worn Cameras Launches October 1st, 2020 The St. Thomas Police Services Board is moving forward with research on equipping St. Thomas Police Officers with body worn cameras as a part of their daily uniform. The first step will be a pilot project in partnership with Axon, the global leader in connected public safety technologies, and its subsidiary Axon Public Safety Canada, Inc. Axon is also the current supplier of TASER Conducted Energy Devices (CEDs) ...worn by STPS Officers. The St. Thomas Police Services Board supports building public trust, community support and enhancing officer safety and public safety. This is an example of our clear commitment to ensuring we have an accountable police service to those who they serve. Chair Dave Warden Twelve body worn cameras have been secured for this trial period. Six cameras will be deployed per shift while the other half are having the data downloaded and recharge. The six deployed cameras will be rotated amongst Officers on Community Patrol. Since not every officer on shift is being equipped with a body camera during the pilot, not every interaction with the public will be recorded. Body worn cameras will undoubtedly assist with improving the high-quality public service expected of police officers and enhance police accountability while at the same time increasing public trust. We have come so far in developing and strengthening relationships with our community, and in my opinion, body worn cameras will only boost our ability to improve the overall well-being of St. Thomas. We look forward to working with Axon and moving ahead as soon as possible. Chief Chris Herridge We are extremely pleased to be able to support the St. Thomas Police Service’s research into body-worn cameras. Our experience across Canada and around the world allows Axon to provide the Service with independent resources and contacts that will allow them to effectively evaluate these innovative technologies in support of both community and officer safety for years to come said Stefan Schurman, Axon Canada’s Senior Regional Manager. The pilot will last 120 days ending in January 2021.
