Thanks @hannahmoves for this great breakdown [MULTIDISCIPLINARY CARE APPROACHES] . . .... I think many would agree that having a multi-disciplinary management strategy for a client dealing with a complex health situation should yield the most optimal health outcomes. Each professional brings a unique skillset as defined by their scope of practice. . However, having multiple professionals working with the same person is only as helpful as their ability to collaborate. . COLLABORATIVE Equal understanding of the clients goals. A shared narrative (Language, messaging, empowerment tactics etc.). A common & modern understanding of body symptoms & pain. Agreement as to the dispositions involved in the clients condition/pain. A team effort to prioritize the most relevant factors. . SILO-BASED Some professionals as interactors others as operators A mixed narrative (i.e. Mixed messaging, language etc.) Disagreement about explanations for symptoms & pain. Disagreement about dispositions involved in the clients condition/pain. Professional bias that my lane of care is most important. . Silo-based care is dangerous as it can lead to increased confusion, anxiety and distrust of the healthcare system. It may only serve to perpetuate a health related problem and spawn a learned helplessness regarding their health and life. . Having many professionals working with a client doesnt automatically make matters better. . In fact, in many cases it probably makes matters worse. . #osteopathy #physicaltherapy #stjohns#newfoundland See more

The Biggest Squat Myths & Misconceptions Part 5 - Chest Up! At last we enter into the final portion of this series. If only I had a dollar for every time I he...ard this cue shouted from coaches, spectators, and gym buddies alike. Of course it always comes from place of wanting your friend or client to succeed but unfortunately from a biomechanics perspective it is not really helpful. * When we try to lift the chest up during the squat what we are really doing is lifting the ribcage away from the abdomen. This drastically reduces intra abdominal air pressure rendering our breathing and bracing pointless while also making the individual significantly less explosive out of the hole (bottom position of the squat). This also increases the amount of lumbar extension we have very often preventing a deeper squat as well as causing the hips to shoot back behind you and rise to quickly (I know many of you can relate to this). * What we should actually be striving for in the squat is a neutral ribcage and neutral spine position (not extended back) at all times. This will allow a deeper squat that allows you to stay more up right (relative to your personal limb length). And it will also make it easier on the way up to always have your hips travelling forward and not create a situation in which they are shooting behind you. * Hope you guys enjoyed these and were able to squat better because of them! #osteopathy #stabilityosteopathy #mobility #stability #squats #physicaltherapy #newfoundland #stjohns

Movement is medicine for your spine and overall health. Exercising is one of the best things you can do to benefit your entire body and it also helps keep the s...pine flexible and strong. Whether its walking, running, swimming or dancing, every time you exercise you are investing in your health. While you work towards exercising more and improving your fitness level, there are little things you can do to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. If you spend most of your day sitting, take regular breaks and walk around every 20-30 minutes. Look for opportunities where you could be moving instead of sitting or standing still. Choosing the stairs instead of an elevator, getting off one bus stop before your destination and walking around while speaking on the phone are great ways to keep moving as you go about your day. #newfoundland #osteopathy #physicaltherapy #stjohns #stabilityosteopathy #manualtherapy #mountpearl #spinehealth #nl

All this working from home can be a pain in the neck, quite literally. Be mindful of your posture Poor posture puts enormous stress on the body. Slouching, hunching and other awkward positions affect more than just your appearance. Poor posture can deteriorate the health of your spine over time, causing pain, decreasing flexibility and even impacting mobility. Being mindful of your posture and correcting it may take a bit of practice but eventually, good posture will become s...econd nature. The key to good posture is keeping your spine neutral and maintaining its natural curves. Hold your head up with the chin parallel to the floor and keep your shoulders back, but relaxed. Make sure you distribute your weight evenly on both feet. When sitting, dont cross your legs keep your feet flat on the floor or use a footrest. #newfoundland #osteopathy #physicaltherapy #stjohns #mountpearl #stabilityosteopathy #manualtherapy

To keep up with this roadrunner form of living, we dont think twice before putting self-care on the back burner. More often than not, it takes a wake-up call to notice the toll this kind of lifestyle takes on our lives. No matter how indulgent or fancy the term may sound, self-care is crucial for our physical, emotional and mental well-being. "The body remembers. The body knows."

[PAIN IS SO WEIRD] . . .... This is a fascinating case of a woman with right upper limb phocomelia (i.e. absent or underdeveloped limbs/digits) who, post-amputation of her right hand following trauma, sprouted a phantom hand that contained five digits, including a phantom thumb and index finger that had been absent since her birth. . Initially the two new phantom fingers were perceived as half of typical size, but after three decades of mirror therapy, she was able to elongate these digits to normal length. . This certainly suggests an innate somatosensory representation of the whole hand was always present in her brain. The representation of two absent fingers would have remained dormant due to a lack of sensory input from the actual hand. . However, with amputation and a change/removal to the afferent sensory input, this in some way (i.e. who knows) led to a disinhibition of this dormant representation and the emergence of a phantom hand pain that included all five digits. . So fascinating. Hey pain nerds, whats your take? . Dont sit still. Make moves! . Nick Hannah, PT Registered Physiotherapist #hannahmoves #hmpaincaremoves . Ref: McGeoch P, Ramachandran VS. Happy Mother's Day All! To all those in the trenches of new motherhood, many of whom feel isolated as it is due to the life-altering transition of bringing hom...e baby, know that you are not alone. To all the working moms out there, the usual high-wire act of balancing career and family recently got a lot more harrowing with the children out of school or daycare. Working from home while trying not to ignore your kids is bringing on extra pangs of guilt. Its normal to lose your patience youre only human. Be kind to yourself. To the single moms shouldering this extra burden solo, the magnitude of what you are facing is no doubt overwhelming. Being the centre of your childs universe without being able to call on grandparents, friends and babysitters for help is a lot to handle. Know that you are enough. To the moms of special needs kids, who are trying to compensate for cancelled services, your love goes a long way. Youve got this. To all the mothers who are healthcare workers nurses, doctors, orderlies, pharmacists, public health officials, caregivers, scientists, paramedics and lab technicians you are risking your lives to protect ours. Yet you still come home after a long shift to care for your own families. Thank you a million times over. You are superheroes. To all the moms who are essential workers supermarket cashiers, bus drivers, cleaners and postal workers you do jobs that are frequently undervalued and yet have never been more important. You sometimes work long hours for low pay. You continue your labour while your children have no school or daycare to go to. We see you, and we salute your contributions. To all the teachers and early childcare educators, who are preparing to welcome kids back to class soon under trying circumstances, you have never been more appreciated. To all the moms who have been locked away from us, in nursing homes, hospitals, or seniors residences, to protect them from the ravages of COVID-19, we have not forgotten you. We miss you and yearn to see you soon. To all the mothers and grandmothers we cant see right now because of real distance or social distancing, we want so badly to hug you. But we dont want to risk your lives. We want to keep you safe so you can be with us for a long time to come. To all the mothers we have recently lost, due to the coronavirus or other causes, we cannot honour you with the funerals, memorial services and burials you deserve. But we cherish your memory and keep you in our hearts. This is a Mothers Day like no other and lets hope it will be the only one of its kind. But if there is a silver lining, its that our recent struggles highlight the extraordinary efforts of moms, day in and day out. Perhaps it will help us to value motherhood, in all its messy and rewarding glory, all the more. Stay safe everyone Stability Osteopathy
