Vulnerability- that feeling we all spend much of our lives trying to avoid. The thing is , though, knowing how to be vulnerable in the right situations at the right time makes us stronger, more compassionate, more emotionally resilient. Without vulnerability there is no heart. As horses are prey they know all too well what vulnerability means. The most vulnerable position for a horse to be in physically is lying on the ground. I showed up at the stables with my client that day and found this beautiful horse on the ground. This was a highly unusual occurrence. But the horse did not budge, on seeing us , and when my client sat on the ground beside her and hugged her , she didn’t even flinch. Later we were able to discuss what does vulnerability mean to her as it seems pretty clear this horse knew what she needed in the moment.

There is a beautiful expression I like to refer to in this work and it’s called holding space. What does the phrase mean to you? Because HORSES do it best. To me it means being fully present in the here and now, with love and compassion. There is no being more spiritual than a horse when it comes to holding space. They have no agenda, no preconceived notions about who you are or what you are doing there, and no judgement about your condition or attitude. They just give you r...oom to be you. When we humans try to be there for each other, we often screw things up by trying to be the hero or by diving in to try to fix things- with the best of intentions. Sometimes we even make it about ourselves or obsess what we going to say in response without fully listening. Not with horses. They hold space with love and compassion, and listen with heart; leaving you healed in the process. See more
