Winchester Curling Club little rockin’ WINCHESTER Now into its 87th year the Winchester Curling Club (WCC) is boasting a full contingent of its youngest membe...rs. The 2014-2015 Little Rocks program is bursting at the seams with 34 youngsters, ages five to 12 years, learning the basics of the roaring game. With the clubhouse full of supportive parents, grandparents and siblings watching, this year’s crop of Little Rockers are being guided by Tim Mark, his wife Rhonda and a team of bantam/junior assistant coaches through drills, taught skills and playing mini games each Wednesday evening. Mark, a longtime club member and volunteer instructor, said this year’s enrolment of 34 is the highest in a number of years. They are good kids and have fun learning, he said. Mark is quick to give credit for the support provided by Rhonda and his assistants, Grace Cave, James Barnes, Emily Cooper, Dylan Barkley and Matthew Roach, who began their curling careers in the WCC’s Little Rocks program. When we are running the program out on the ice surface, I have many helpers [parents] inside, who prepare hot chocolate for all of the kids. Winchester’s Little Rockers are also given the opportunity to experience real game situations by taking part in competitions in various area locations, including Kemptville, Ottawa and Manotick. Mark noted the WCC would host the annual Ran Wylie Memorial Bonspiel on Sun., Feb. 8, an event that will feature a field of 12 teams, including two from the WCC. The Little Rockers also have two fun evenings on their schedule. On Tues., Dec. 16 and Wed. Dec. 17, the students have challenged their parents to face them in some friendly on-ice competition. Mark said the games are fun to watch because the kids really try to show their parents how much they have learned and how good they have become. Credit - Winchester Press
