High efficiency oil-fired furnace flue temperatures are lower than that produced by older furnaces and their vent connectors are typically smaller in diameter. As a result, original clay chimney liners are often too large and don't heat up like they used to. The resulting condensation can then deteriorate the flue liner, the chimney and even the vent connector as shown in these photos.

Chimney with badly deteriorated glazed brick. Original grout-topped stepped-brick cap did not protect chimney any better than the added SS cap which also lacks sufficient overhang / drip to protect chimney.
