Hello families and friends of Step By Step Child Care! We have spent the past couple months since our reopening figuring out what the new normal is and how best to care for your children in a safe, friendly and fun learning environment. We initially reopened a very limited number of spaces to make sure things would run smoothly... and they definitely have! We now feel comfortable reopening more child care spaces in our Toddler (16+ months old) and Preschool (2 1/2+ years old...) programs. If you or someone you know is looking for child care (feel free to share this post), contact us at 807-622-3383 or by email at [email protected]. Subsidized spaces are also available. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Surprise surprise, COVID-19 symptom screening has changed once again. The government has just released the changes (see the link below for details) Of particular interest is the runny nose symptom... https://covid-19.ontario.ca/school-screening/

Runny noses... its a constant battle with them for children of all ages. With the added pressures of the current COVID-19 world that we live in, we have been hearing that many families have been referred to a testing center based solely on a runny nose. Understandably there has been some frustration and anger from parents who now have to miss work/school to care for their children while they await test results. We reached out to the Thunder Bay District Health Unit to get ...some more insight into this policy and if it might be changing in the future. They have advised us that the decision to remove a runny nose as a COVID-19 screening symptom is being discussed at the Provincial level. It was also indicated that 20% of children who tested positive for COVID-19 only had a runny nose as a symptom, so that is certainly something to bear in mind. And finally, the Health Unit wants to remind families that if their child has a medically diagnosed reason for a runny nose (allergies, etc) then as long as the family has advised the child care center of this prior to the runny nose, the child can remain at the center. So if your child has allergies or other medical condition that means they regularly get a runny nose, let us know so we can make note of it.

Happy Friday everyone! Below is the link to the COVID-19 screening tool recommended by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit for parents to use at home for their children. It is designed to be used for schoolage children, but it is equally applicable to child care. We wanted to included it as it is continually updated and helps to add some clarity during these confusing times. . ... https://covid-19.ontario.ca/school-screening/
