I often see women who feel they are going through the motions each day without a second for themselves. When I ask, what do you do for fun? What makes you laugh? How do you play? I usually get blank stares or nervous laughter. One person said they haven’t played since elementary school. There are days when I can relate. Being a woman, mother, caregiver, provider, or partner is almost defined by sacrifice. But we must take care of ourselves. For me that doesn’t mean painting... my nails or getting a spa day. I actually don’t enjoy sitting still and being pampered. Looking after myself means taking 30 minutes for an audiobook walk (alone), surfing or getting in the water, or having a catch up with friends and family. I only get these moments because of my support team (Mom, Dad, Husband, sister, friends, and daycare provider- soon!) I’m so grateful to these people who allow me the time and space to look after myself. Step 1: find people who will help you take time for yourself. Step 2: identify what you want to do! Whether you are postpartum or post glory days, if you’re feeling a little lost, try these ideas to reconnect with yourself. #selfcare #findingfun #womenneedtoplay #funisnotjustforkids #playtimeformom See more

I may be a day late but it’s never to late to post photos of my adorable my gentle giant, Gilly! A 90 lbs golden retriever who will eat anything except lettuce, tolerates being mauled by his baby brother, and is obsessed with fishing and mountain biking. He’s our love pup #internationaldogday #furlove #goldenretriever #gillythedog @ Port Perry, Ontario

Challenge accepted. I’ve been totally out of the loop on this black and white selfie thing. At first, I figured it was just a makeup free BS thing. I’m a social media skeptic, particularly when it comes to armchair activism. But I can and will get behind anything that raises awareness for the health and safety of women. In this campaign we’re talking about murdered women in Turkey (see my stories for more information). Thanks to @drlynnend for the nomination. I ask that @alexissciuk @alexandra_bolahood and @vaishna.s pass along this important message.

As NDs we are always trying to find the root cause of a symptom or disease. We use the tools at our disposal like a thorough history, blood work, and specialized testing but what’s often left unsaid is that we are normally dealing with a privileged population, those that can afford private healthcare or have insurance for out of pocket help. But for the vast majority of people naturopathic medicine is not accessible and more often than not the root causes of disease lie in so...cial inequalities. Poverty. Racism. Inadequate access to healthcare. While working in a community health Centre in downtown Toronto I saw first hand how these factors worsened health. I don’t have the answers but I’m actively working to educate myself on the problems. Please share any resources you are using to learn about racism and inequality. Please share any ideas you have about increasing access to healthcare- especially naturopathic medicine. #blacklivesmatter #socialinequalities #healthcareaccess #racismanddisease #povertyandhealth #letsopenthedialogue See more

Are you often running to the toilet? Embarrassed by your bowel urgency? Struggling to go places, especially during COVID-19 when public washrooms are minimal? You may have IBS and if so, you are not alone. IBS has a worldwide prevalence of 1 in 10 people, although this is likely a gross underestimation due to underreporting. IBS can present as predominantly diarrhea, constipation, or both. A diagnosis is of IBS is made when you don’t fit any other pathology and you experience... abdominal pain for at least one day a week for at least 3 months and also have 2 or more of the following symptoms: Pain passing stool Pain following a change in stool frequency Pain following a change in stool appearance IBS is a multifactorial condition that requires a multifactorial treatment approach. I want to know about your diet, your gut microbiome, your stress levels, your medical history, your family history, and more. I may order bloodwork or specialized stool testing to identify your dominant gut bacterial strains. Treatments may include changes to what you’re eating, anti-inflammatory herbs and supplements, strain-specific probiotics, and stress reduction techniques. What works for one patient with IBS may not work for another. Treatment needs to be individualized and requires some trial and error but dramatic improvement is possible! If you’re struggling with IBS like symptoms consider keeping a food diary. Write down everything you put into your mouth (including liquids) for a week or more. In addition, track your bowel movements (including time, urgency, any associated pain or cramping, and the stool consistency). This will help you identify patterns and triggering foods. Common triggers that worsen IBS symptoms include: - Alcohol - Beans - Caffeine - Fatty foods/Deep friend foods - Chocolate - Milk products (lactose) - Sweeteners (sorbitol) - Vegetables (broccoli) Good luck identifying your food triggers. Hopefully you’ll be happy eating and happy pooping soon! Artwork by @maggiecoledraws #IBS #poopdiary #guthealth #naturalmedicine #naturoathicdoctor #portperry #healthspacecollective

Happy Earth Day! This is a photo of one of my favourite surf breaks, Swami’s in Encinitas, California. Just looking at it makes me feel relaxed. In general, it seems that most people feel at ease in green or blue spaces. In fact, there are numerous studies underway exploring the psychological and physical benefits we experience when being next to, in, or on the water. There is even a term for it, #bluemind coined by marine biologist and researcher Dr. Wallace J Nichols. Whet...her you prefer blue space or green space, it doesn’t really matter. Us NDs generally refer to the enormous benefits from being outdoors as Vitamin N, for nature, and this is a common prescription for a variety of ailments. While we may not be able to enjoy the parks or the water right now, we can still get outside and soak up some vitamin N. (Not to mention some vitamin D today!) #happyearthday See more

Its always a pleasure to write for ReThink BC, an amazing organization dedicated to young women with breast cancer. Even though I am deeply private, I think some experiences need to be shared. I write to heal and to help. From the messages I’ve received I know I’m doing both. So thank you. And please continue to reach out. Posted @withregram @rethinkbreastcancer "Becoming infertile at 27 was a double whammy on top of my cancer diagnosis. With the help of an agency, we fo...und a home for one of those chilled embryos. For 9+ months it took up occupancy inside the womb of an incredible volunteer. At the time, she was a total stranger to us and yet she committed her body to growing our family. She agreed to self-inject fertility medications, undergo numerous medical tests, put her travel plansand her lifeon hold while hoping, whole-heartedly, to become pregnant with our baby." - @drstephnd Head to our link in bio to read Stephanie's story, "It’s Because of Surrogacy That I Am A Mother." #NationalInfertilityAwarenessWeek #NIAW See more

1 in 6 Canadians struggle with infertility I am one of those 1 in 6. I can tell you from experience that I never expected to be sitting in a fertility clinic and I’m sure none of the women next to me did either. ... But hope is not lost, I’ve had to interrupt writing this post three times in order to cater to my toddler’s demands. Infertility does NOT condemn you to a childless future. Whether you’ve been diagnosed with PCOS, endometriosis, an anovulatory cycle, or you don’t know what the hell is going on, there are many interventions to try (both naturopathic and conventional). There are also multiple ways of building a family. If you’re struggling to conceive speak with an expert who gets you and can help you plan the next steps. #infertilitysucks #infertilityawareness #CIAW2020 #1in6 #fertility #naturalfertility #infertility #IVF #integrativemedicine #pcos #endometriosis See more
