Simplifying what he sees into something fresh and original is a challenge that Cameron Bird loves. Having studied with Canadian artist, K.C. Yuan Cheng Bis father had an immense impact on Bi as a teacher and mentor; he died in 1995. I still miss him so much, he says. He gave me a strong foundation in colour, Bi continues. Even today, I still remember his words: You do everything on paper, which is flat. But on paper, you have to make space. Do not think, This is flat, think This is space, from close to middle to far; you have to create distance on paperwith colour. If you have three trees beside a road, even if the colours are the same [to look at], if you paint it, you cannot paint the same colour for the three trees, Bi declares. These are essentially the principles of atmospheric perspective, one of the many ways in which colour became Bis tool for expression and description.

I was at the grocery store and couldnt get over how many fresh flowers customers were purchasing during the pandemic. To me, this was evidence that beauty persists, especially in times of uncertainty or hardship. Yuan Cheng Bis paintings exemplify this. Far from distracting us from what is essential, they draw us closer to what is good in life.

Jennifer is inspired by both wide-open spaces and mountain vistas as well as the tranquil calm of lakes and streams. Illustrated with vivid colour and dramatic skies, Jennifer recreates simpler forms from what she sees in Canadian landscapes and rural architecture. Beginning with painting the canvas with black gesso, Jennifer sketches her design before adding layers of colour. The resulting black lines break up the bold strokes creating an almost stained- glass effect.

Mine is a graphic take on life. Through the relative chaos, I find the design in nature and dance with it on canvas. Using line and simplifying what I see, I look for interesting shapes and colours, and explore the spaces in between. Rhythm is found, and exaggerated. With an upbeat palette and a bit of whimsy for good measure, I capture Canadian landscapes and rural architecture in acrylic paint on canvas. - Jennifer Woodburn

For Donna Jo Massie, her first visit to Bow Valley National Park was love at first sight. Originally from Cherokee, South Carolina, the variety and scale of alpine landscapes was limitless and the perfect fit for her as an educator, naturalist, and artist. Over the past 30+ years, Donna Jo has led hundreds of painting workshops, written two guides to painting alpine landscape in watercolour, and created hundreds of breathtaking paintings capturing the majesty of the natural landscape around us. Her enjoyment of hiking in the mountains gives her the opportunity for painting on location. She is inspired not only by the high alpine landscape but also by flowers.

While social distancing, Donna Jo Massie took the opportunity to re-discover the hiking trails close to her home in the Canadian Rockies and the incredible views they offered. The bliss of being outdoors in her beloved mountains is evident in all her paintings. #100DaysOfHope
