This powerful ad by Dove shows the process of a photo being edited before being posted online. "By age 13, 80% of girls distort the way they look in photos". Watching this video with your kids, or the Youth you work with is a great way to open a dialogue about positive body images and how distorted social media pictures can be. Teaching kids to love their bodies starts with you modeling that. Instead of talking about your flaws and imperfections, focus on your strengths and things you love about yourself.

There is a huge problem in Canada, that is not talked about nearly enough, so on this National day of awareness educate yourself. Indigenous Women and Girls are 12 times more likely to disappear or go missing then a women of any other race in Canada. Although it is impossible to know an exact number, due to the lack of seriousness given when an Indigineous person goes missing and the amount of wrongfully labeled deceased women as accidental death when foul-play was evident - ...there have been approximately 4000 missing or murdered Indigineous Women and Girls in the last 30 years in Canada. The UN high commissioner for human rights has recognized that the basic inequalities that exist between Indigenous peoples and the rest of Canada are a reminder of the Canadian state’s failure to overcome systemic racism, the intergenerational trauma of colonialism and the inadequate provision of specialized services and programs for each community. I was glad to see that in the 2021 Canadian Budget the federal government is proposing $18 billion "over the next five years, to improve the quality of life and create new opportunities for people living in Indigenous communities." However it is not enough to simply say the money is available - the right people must be appointed to ensure the funds are well used to improve infrastructures and supports in the communities. Safe schools, Youth & women's shelters, drop in centers, Counselling services, Employment opportunities, increased funding for Reserve Police and the list goes on. I challange you to educate yourself about what is happening in your own community and understand how your perspective of a culture adds to the stereotypes that create more barriers for this group of Sisters, Daughters, Mothers and Grandmothers.
