Let's see some of our parish pets 2 Samuel 12:3 But the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter.

"I came to set fire to the earth; and how I wish it were already kindled!" (Luke 12:49) Let's do our dear Lord a favour... and live our faith "out loud"! We are called to be "salt and light" to the earth! But what happens if the salt loses its saltiness? (Matthew 5:13-16) Let's not let this happen. The world needs the message we have as Catholics. We have a joyful duty to live joyfully because Jesus has saved us and redeemed us.... It has been said: "If Jesus is in your heart, tell your face!" Smile, and so be a flicker of light in the dark! Do a good deed, say a kindly word, yada yada yada. Just don't do one thing: light your lamp and hide it under the bed! (Matthew 5:15) We leave church with the fire and the light inside of us. Let it shine! (Gospel of the day: Luke 12:49-53)

Wanted to share a nice reflection on today's gospel (in addition to Fr Ambroise's good homily!) Peace, Joe... Lord, help us to have a good day today "Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6,7)

"But woe to you Pharisees! for you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God..." What jumped out to me on today's gospel was how easily any of us can miss the whole point of the gospel, and of life, while we were busy doing other things -- or thinking something that wasn't actually that important, was important. It's nice to have opportunities and reminders of going "back to basics" -- when life can seem complicated. The two most important com...mandments are: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength." And: "Love your neighbour as yourself." "Treat others as you would like to be treated." Greater than any "herb" we can offer to God is the gold we can offer Him when we treat the people we come across everyday with kindness, grace, and attention. Don't sacrifice too much time to your phone, or your job, or any other thing that can become a distraction. Don't neglect God! Don't neglect the people in your lives: from family and friends right down to the person asking for change on the road. Do something so that our lives proclaim justice and the love of God. From one sinner to another. We're trying... :) Joe Youth Minister Gospel of the day: Luke 11:42-46

In today's gospel we learn that "one who is forgiven much, loves much." As followers of Jesus, we have been forgiven much! Do we have the faith to realize this? When we get closer to God, who is the Light, we might notice our sins more easily than someone who chooses to live in the dark. It's like how it's easier to see dust in our house when the sun is shining in. It is helpful for us to notice our sinfulness, because it leads us to encounter Jesus who loves us completely, a...nd forgives us. We should all strive to ask God for that kind of faith that would lead us to love a lot. When we are aware of our pain, our misery we can experience how healing God can be. It will lead us to a lively faith that can help others. And don't be like the Pharisee in this gospel! Have great love and compassion for those who are hurting and left out. God often inspires them with the greatest faith. Keep asking for the amazing gift of faith! And, don't forget about Confession as an awesome way to have your sins forgiven. May Jesus help our faith in him to be like the woman in today's gospel. (Read it yourself: Luke 7:36-50 What jumps out to you? Talk to God about it, ask Him to help you learn more about His love.) Joe St. Eugene, pray for us.

There are a lot of opportunities through today's readings to catch a glimpse of the comfort that comes from following God's way. In the first reading, we read "If anyone thinks that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know ... Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up." And the gospel is packed with stuff to think about. I personally am drawn to the last part "Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you ...will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you..." For me, again it comes down to the gift of faith, and the gift of freedom that Jesus wants to give us. Read these readings yourself (pick the Gospel if you want to pick just one) and let God speak to you. The best gift you can give yourself for this new school year is faith. Ask God for it, ask Him to help you understand Scripture. The way I see it, we can either panic and worry or we can trust God and have faith. Maybe you never thought of it that way before, but that is the power of having Jesus as your Saviour. I don't know exactly how it's all going to happen yet, but I hope to meet you and get to know you more as we keep going one day at a time. :) -Joe Daily Readings: 1 Corinthians 8:1-7, 11-13 Psalm 139:1-3, 13-14, 23-24 Luke 6:27-38

(The view today from out of my office window. Yay, I have an office! :P ) ... Hey everybody, this is Joe again, your new youth minister @ St. Eugene's. Couple quick notes though: 1. We are all youth ministers in our own way (including the young people themselves!), and so therefore, 2. my "official" title is "Co-ordinator of youth ministry". I guess, in short, it's part of my job to try to make things happen but I am not the only one who will be ministering to the youth of o...Continue reading

Hello again! This is Joe again, youth minister @ St. Eugene's. Wanted to share another post a little more about me. I also wrote (I like writing :P ) some reflections on today's readings again, feel free to read as much or as little of this as you like (I know maybe it got a little long by social media standards- but I believe 5 minutes of reading isn't too bad! :P ). In the picture you will see 4 things that literally and symbolically represent youth ministry to me: (1) A s...Continue reading

Hey guys! This is Joe, the new youth minister here at St. Eugene's! I want to offer a (hopefully) brief reflection from today's daily readings in the Catholic Church, I know you might not know me yet but I hope with the pandemic this can be something for now. :) The reflection is geared for young people (so share it if you can!), but hopefully anyone can find it useful. Today's first reading is from the Book of Ezekiel, chapter 24, verses 1 to 11. (Consider reading it before ...using the reflection.) :) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Basically, the LORD is upset with His shepherds (let's say like priests, kings, leaders at that time) for not caring for the flock, and as a result they have been "fed to the wolves" and have become lost. God eventually promises to seek after them Himself, which of course is fulfilled and finds its climax in Jesus (who leaves the 99 even to pursue the 1 who is lost). God says to the shepherds, "With force and harshness you have ruled them" and "Should not the shepherds feed the sheep? ... but the shepherds have fed themselves." We have to be real about the fact that our Church is not perfect. Of course, there is a message in here for our Church leaders (priests, bishops, etc..) and for us too, who in some way or another have influence over others, even if it's just the most vulnerable or least popular kid in our class or our school. Also, I used to watch this anime where I saw the quote: "Pray, or become prey." What are you doing to protect yourself against the wolves of our generation? Maybe movies or music with bad messages or bad images, people with hatred in their hearts who may seek to make you forget about your preciousness in God's eyes just the way you are, or against the pressures of a world that goes a million miles an hour and pressures you to make so much of yourself that it can be very overwhelming. So "Pray, or become prey." Prayer is a way of uniting yourself to Jesus, the Good Shepherd. Holy Mass is a way of very intimately uniting yourself with Jesus, the Good Shepherd. Confession let's you start again, a place where Jesus picks you up and puts you over His shoulders, and covers for our mistakes with great love and compassion. Reading the Bible lets God speak His words of life to us. Saying a Hail Mary or saying the Rosary is a way for our good Mother to be compassionate to us just as she loved Jesus her son. God is so good. Let us protect ourselves and be strong because our God cares about us and is with us on the journey -- and is closer to us than we can ever imagine. Let Jesus be your shepherd! And may God bless and strengthen our shepherds: Pope Francis, Bishop Crosby and all bishops, our priests (especially Fr. Andrew and Fr. Ambroise!), deacons, lay ministers, sisters, brothers...... <3 :D With love, Joe P.S. I gotta get that jacket, super dope . We'll put an order in if we can find them, who's in?
