Helen Durance The family of Helen (Curly) Durance take great comfort knowing she has joined the love of her life, Ross (September 1929 December 2007). Our beautiful mother passed away peacefully Saturday, September 19th, 2020 with family at her side. Helen was born in Dryden, January 6th, 1930. She enjoyed a happy childhood filled with dancing, music, swimming and skating. Mom married her childhood sweetheart Ross in 1949 at The Riverview Lodge, which they eventually purcha...sed in 1977 becoming gracious hosts to patrons for many years. In 1964 they moved to The Farm in Waldhof on Eagle Lake where they spent a wonderful year enjoying pioneer farm life. To quote Ross, our house was very old and had very little in the way of comfort, such as water but since we lived on the lake we really didn’t suffer much until winter. Considering she had 3 young children relocating to a farm with few amenities, we truly believe this to be an example of her industrious spirit and strength. Soon the farm became her sanctuary where she nurtured her love for gardening, cooking and decorating her home. In 1965 Helen and Ross bought The Red Eagle in Vermilion Bay and spent many years devoted to the store. One of her other endeavours became the manufacturing of Hagens Dressing, which is still going strong today. The farm became the heart of the family. A welcoming and comforting space where we would celebrate occasions with our growing families. The cozy farm house, nowhere near the pioneer home they first moved into all those years ago. It was here that they grew older together. Helen will always be remembered as a gracious, gentlewoman. Helen is survived by her children Ron (Riaan) Durance, Susan (Jordon) Durance and Judy (Jeff) Gaudry, her grandchildren; Kate (Chris) Sakamoto, Tim (Nadine) Gaudry, Ben (Emma) and Jamie (Kayla) Railian, and great grandchildren; Jude, Makio, Lucas and Adalyn. A Private Family Service will be held at a later date. Should friends desire donations may be made to Princess Court DECO through Stevens Funeral Homes, P.O. Box 412, Dryden, ON P8N 2Z1. Rose (nee Robinson) was born in Dryden on March 14 th , 1940 where she remained throughout her life. She was predeceased in 1998 by her devoted husband of 39 years, Aime Marginet. Rose later found love again with partner, Cliff R...obertson, until his passing in 2014. Rose is survived by her daughters, Lori LaForrest (Ken) of Dryden and Gaylyn Holmstrom (Brent) of Kenora. She was the absolute proudest grandmother of Hilary Pritchard (Steven), Jayme Chute (Michael), Kylie Holmstrom and Kiersten Holmstrom and great-granddaughters, Jaedyn Chute and Haylie Chute. She is also survived by her only brother, Edward Robinson (Marg) of Prince George, B.C. and many nieces and nephews. Rose was an active community member during her life and held positions such as Commissioner of the Girl Guides of Canada and Senior Regent of the Dryden Chapter of the Women of the Moose. Rose was extremely talented when it came to hobbies and crafts. She loved sewing, knitting, crocheting, needle point, quilting and recently Swedish embroidery became a passion. She was often teased about her moat around her arm chair as she was usually surrounded with many projects on the go at one time. She loved to make people happy and sharing her beautiful creations brought her so much joy. Rose loved her granddaughters beyond words and was quick to brag about their many talents. She was also a shameless super-fan, not caring if she was the loudest in the building. She watched them play volleyball, baseball, basketball, soccer.you name it, she was there to cheer them on. Most recently, she enjoyed being able to watch her two great-granddaughters at swimming lessons. There are not enough words to describe how much she was loved and how sadly she will be missed. Rose had celebrated her 80 th birthday with family and many friends just two weeks before. May she be remembered as she was that day, happy, smiling, beautiful, surrounded by friendship and love. A Memorial Funeral Service will be held Friday September 18, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. in Our Saviour Lutheran Church with Pastor Alex Timm officiating. Interment of ashes will follow in the Dryden Cemetery. George Wiebe In the early morning hours of Tuesday, September 8th, 2020 we said goodbye to our husband, father, grandfather and friend George Wiebe, following a brief illness. George was born on August 7, 1947 in Durango, Mexico. As the baby of the Wiebe family of nine, he always joked his parents waited for perfection and then broke the mould when it was finally achieved. Six years later, the little blonde-haired boy with overalls and no shoes hopped on a Greyhound bus with ...his family who had decided to return to Canada to settle in Southern Manitoba. Some years later in the mid 60’s, Dryden became his home when he went to work building houses with his brother Dave. This transitioned into his career in concrete and he always laughed about giving the people in Dryden something solid to believe in. He was always quick to remind us there is a difference between cement and concrete (powder vs. mixed product, you know!), and it became a long standing joke that he poured concrete at this place or that one, 25 years ago, even though that number has grown over the years. His love of concrete made the Confederation Bridge a thing of wonder for him and he talked about it since construction began in 1993. In 2015, Jenna made his dream of seeing it in person come true by presenting him with this trip of a lifetime on his 68th birthday. The seasonal concrete business led to winter bush hauls and later full-time mill-to-mill woodchip hauls. George could back up a set of B trains with his eyes closed but give him a half ton with a boat trailer and chaos would ensue! He loved driving truck and cherished all the friendships he made with his fellow ‘gear grinders’. In more recent years, mornings were spent at the seniors’ centre in Vermilion Bay, sharing ‘nothing but the gospel truth’ over coffee and toast with the boys. For many years camping was one of his greatest pleasures, enjoying relaxing around the fire at the lake with family and friends where he always pondered the question What is it about a fire? Left behind in his memory: his wife Karen, his daughters Jenna, Stacy (Rick) and Bri (Karen’s daughter), his son Dave (Kelly), his granddaughters Michelle (Grandpa was always making sure her knee caps were properly tightened) and Haylee, and his furbaby Katherine George (aka Katie). He is also survived by four sisters, one brother and numerous nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and we are hoping for a casual story telling gathering in summer 2021. If you have any stories or pictures that you would like to share, we would love to hear from you. Please send them to [email protected]. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Happy Go Lucky Seniors Centre in Vermilion Bay through the Stevens Funeral Homes P.O. Box 412, Dryden ON P8N 2Z1. Condolences may be posted at www.stevensfuneralhomes.ca Gone but not forgotten byeloveyaseeya until we see you again.

Many summers were spent camping up the Basket Lake Road where friends would join them and parties became the norm. Gaile also had many other interests. In the summer she tended her beautiful garden, hosted many fish fries, and loved to entertain relatives and friends. In the winter, she loved to curl and bonspiel with the girls often travelling for fun curling and gambling weekends to U.S. towns. Snowbird destinations took her and Dennis to Yuma and Port Aransas, Texas, and Lake Havasu, Arizona. In the fall, Gaile often accompanied Dennis on moose hunts and loved to ride the new side by side looking for grouse. In the past few years when trips to the U.S. were no longer an option, Gaile enjoyed making spring and fall excursions to South Beach Casino where she departed grudgingly with her hard earned dollars, but was rewarded with a few windfalls too. Gaile also loved to do jigsaw puzzles, and complicated 1,000-piece challenges were no match for her skills. Gaile’s family extends their deepest gratitude to her niece Pam, and best friend Debbie who made many arrangements to ensure her peace and comfort in her final days. Kataryna (Kay) Szyszka It is with sadness in our hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother (Baba, Gramma, Great Gram, Great Great Gram) Kataryna (Kay) Szyszka on July 21st , 2020. Born on March 18, 1926 in the Ukraine, Kay arrived in Canada with her husband Mike in 1949 and settled in Ignace Ontario where she continued to reside until moving to Princess Court in Dryden Ontario in 2019. Kay and Mike realized their dreams in Ignace, becoming business owners buil...ding and operating the Lone Pine Motel situated on Agimak Lake where they raised their 3 children. Mom was a hard worker and at one time was a custodian at the Hi-Way Motel and the local school prior to working alongside Mike at the Motel where they both toiled for many, many hours throughout the years. Kay was an avid gardener and always had a large vegetable garden that she tended to with special attention to her flower beds particularly the roses she so dearly loved. Kay had many long-time friends in Ignace and throughout Canada and the United States who returned year after year to enjoy the beauty and comfort provided by Kay and Mike at the Lone Pine Motel. Many people remember the plentiful and delicious feasts she served to family and friends on special holidays. She made sure anyone entering her home always had something to eat whether it was a full course meal, a cookie or perhaps a chocolate and you just didn’t leave empty handed. Her kindness and generous spirit will be greatly missed by all those who were fortunate enough to know her. Kay is survived by her Daughter Sophia, Son John and Daughter Nadia. Also left to mourn her passing are her Grandchildren Sherry-Lee Reid, Duane, Coral and Rodney Szyszka, Marlin Carlson, Jordan and Kyle Lawson and their families. Kay felt blessed to have 12 Great Grandchildren and 3 Great Great Grandchildren and proudly remembered each of their names. Kay was predeceased by her Parents and a Sister, her Husband Mike, Grandson Dean Cameron, Sons-In-Law Scotty Cameron & Brent Lawson and her special cousin Eddy. Kay’s family extends their deepest gratitude to her special friends who kept in contact with her and the many visits they made to keep her company during her time in Princess Court as well as the amazing staff and care givers of Princess Court for their tender care and concern of Kay during her residency there. In keeping with Mom’s wishes there will be no service. Please stop and smell the roses every chance you get and think of Kay. In lieu of flowers, should friends so desire, the family would appreciate donations can be made to Princess Court DECO through Stevens Funeral Homes Moffat Chapel PO Box 412, P8N 2Z1. Frank Attrux In Loving Memory of Ernest Francis Attrux (known as Frank by everyone) who died in the Dryden Regional Health Center on Monday, June 29, 2020. Frank was 91. Frank will be dearly missed by his daughter Pamela Attrux, son Joe Attrux, grandchildren, Reanne Dick, Monique Attrux, Richelle Dick, and Philippe Attrux, two great grandchildren, brother Albert and sister Alice Sinclair, nieces, nephews and other relatives, all of whom were very dear to him. Frank was predec...eased by his loving wife Betty. Frank was a man of principle and hard work who was admired and respected by so many. Born in Hafford, Saskatchewan on February 27th, 1929, Frank grew up during the Great Depression, and the experience had significant bearing on his life and demeanor. Hard physical work in the outdoors of Northwestern Ontario was his passion; he loved operating his road grader, gravel truck and loader and fixing cars, trucks, and small engines. Frank came to Northwestern Ontario in 1945 and started working with MANDO at Trail Lake. His first job was riding shotgun in a 3-ton truck hauling 8-foot wood to the landing at Vermilion Bay: two loads a day, over a rough dirt road, up and down steep hills, hand loaded and unloaded. Frank frequently said that life was so good there compared to the barren prairies that he was able to buy a new car in less than nine months. Frank would work for MANDO and its subsequent versions of a company for 27 years. Frank would often say that he had his 25-year ring when he was just 41 years old! When he left the company in 1973, his boss in Kenora did not believe that he had quit. Frank would receive cheques for another 3 months which he had to return in person to convince his boss that he had actually quit his job. Frank continued to work on his own business of fixing and maintaining cars, grading roads, hauling gravel and landscaping for another 35 years until he was 78. Betty, his wife of 49 years, became ill, and he decided to stop and sell all his equipment. But that never stopped the story telling. If you would listen, Frank could tell you countless tales of 16-hour days in the biting cold or the dusty heat. Not complaining, just bragging of sorts about accomplishments of a stubble jumper from Saskatchewan fully adapted to making a living that he loved in the Northwestern Ontario wilderness. Cremation has taken place, and A Memorial Service will be held in late summer with date and time to be announced. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations can be made to Princess Court DECO through Stevens Funeral Homes Moffat Chapel PO Box 412, P8N 2Z1.
