Can anyone spot the difference? Have you ever looked at the bottom of your shoes ? In this picture you can see the left heel is much more worn down compared to the right heel. ... This can be caused by a number of reasons. In this patient it was caused by a functionally short leg right leg (swipe to see) What does a functional short leg mean ? - it means one leg is shorter than the other. This is caused by postural stress such as tight muscles or fallen arches in the foot. - swipe this person had pain in their right sacroiliac joint and pain over the left QL muscle. - after several sessions of adjustments and soft tissue therapy these postural alterations can be improved! For more information or to have your gait and leg lengths assessed call 905 544 5787 #stevensonhealthandwellness #stevensonchiropractic #leglengths #functionalshortleg #hamiltonchiropractic #hamiltonchiropractor #hamiltonchiropractors #hamont #feetproblemssolved

October 16 is World Spine Day and this year the theme is Back on Track something we’re all keen to do right now. These past months have been hard on everyone. Unfortunately, there is no clear end in sight.... During these months, your back, neck, muscle and nervous system pain have not stopped. Understandably, we’re all hesitant to return to our healthcare providers these days. I’m committed to treating and helping you while taking extra measures to keep you safe. This includes extra cleaning, screening and spacing out of patient appointments among many other measures. We’re doing this to restore your mobility and prevent your pain from returning while keeping the risk to a minimum so that you can live the healthy, active life you want. If you are considering returning to care, contact me if you want to find out more about how we will keep you as safe as possible. My team and I would be happy to let you know everything we’re doing. Best wishes for World Spine Day 2020! #stevensonhealthandwellness #stevensonchiropractic #worldspineday2020 #chiropracticcare #spinhealth #getbackontrack

We had a great weekend learning Vojta's Reflex Locomotion by Dr. Richard Cohen! Key Takeaways: Movement is a outward expression of our central nervous system... Every movement begins with a posture and ends in a posture. When evaluating any movement you need to evaluate the entire bodys position throughout the movement. When you have a postural disturbance, you create a suboptimal movement pattern. If this disturbance persists for more than 6 weeks the central nervous system stores this movement pattern and it becomes your subconscious default movement. All joints in the body act with Antagonistic Synergism - this means that in every movement you have a muscle group pulling and the opposite muscle group elongating while still maintaining tension. - Muscles work both against each other and with each other to make a joint move. Awaken your Human Potential

Another great weekend with Somatic Senses learning DNS Exercise 2 Sports and Fitness! Takeaways: - If the CNS (central nervous system) control is adequate and muscles are activated in balance, then each posture and each spontaneous movement automatically brings all the joints into a functionally centrated position. ... - Functional joint centration is not just a static position, it is a dynamic neuromuscular strategy of movement and stabilization. - Before any movement we must establish a solid base (your core) which is initiated by your diaphragm and followed by abdominal and pelvic floor contraction. Stability Improves Mobility!

Do you suffer from pain in the feet, ankles, legs, knees, hips, back or even neck? Do you have hard calluses on your feet, bunions, hammer toes or fallen arches? Did you know custom foot orthotics can help with all of the above issues? A custom orthotic is a device designed to align the foot and ankle into the most anatomically efficient position. They look like insoles, but are biomechanical medical appliances that are custom made to correct your specific foot imba...lance. Custom orthotics work on your feet much like glasses work on your eyes - they reduce stress and strain on your body by bringing your feet back into proper alignment. The plastic body of the custom orthotic helps to re-align the foot by redirecting and reducing certain motion that takes place during the gait cycle. Custom orthotics fit into your shoes as comfortably as an insole - and they have the advantage of having been made from precise imprints of your feet. Book your appointment today to discuss with Dr. Stevenson if custom orthoticics would benefit your life! @ Stevenson Chiropractic

Pack it Light, Wear it Right As the kids head back to school, its time to start thinking about proper backpack use. Research indicates over 50% of children will experience at least one episode of back pain before their teenage years. This is caused, to a great extent, by improper use of backpacks!... Here are some tips to consider when purchasing and wearing a backpack. Go for lightweight vinyl or canvas. Pick a pack that has two wide, adjustable, padded shoulder straps, along with a hip or waist strap, padded back and plenty of pockets. Make sure your childs pack contains only what is needed for that day. The total weight of the filled pack should be no more than 10 to 15% of the wearers body weight with heavier items placed closer to the wearers back, closer to their centre of gravity. Both shoulder straps should be used, and adjusted so that the pack fits snugly to the body, without dangling to the side. You should be able to slide your hand between the backpack and your childs back. Teach your child how to lift the bag the right way. Bend at the knees (not at the waist) When you can, put the backpack on a chair at home instead of on the floor. When your child has to put it back on again, they wont have to lift it all the way from the floor. Carrying a heavy load that is unevenly or improperly distributed can result in poor posture; and even distort the spinal column, throwing it out of alignment. This can cause muscle strain, headaches, back, neck and arm pain, and even nerve damage. Your childs backpack shouldnt be a drag. Maintaining good back health in youth may help prevent back problems in later life. So, pack it light and wear it right! #stevensonchiropractic #hamiltonchiropractic #hamont #healthandwellness #hamiltonchiros #backtoschool #backpackhealth

Do you suffer from pain down the arms or legs? Have you heard of the terms Sciatica, Pinched Nerve or Disc Bulge? Spinal decompression therapy is the leading non-surgical therapy for disc related injuries in the lumbar and cervical spine. Decompression therapy gently stretches the spinal discs, joints and surrounding soft tissue. This stretching takes pressure off the spinal disks, which are gel-like shock absorbers between the bones in your spine. Decompression therapy achie...ves this by creating negative pressure in the disc. As a result, bulging or herniated disks may retract (re-absorbed), taking pressure off nerves and other structures in your spine. This helps promote movement of water, oxygen, and nutrient-rich fluids into the disks so they can heal. Spinal Decompression Therapy sessions typically last 10 minutes with most people experiencing pain relief with as few as 5 treatments. It is important to remember however, that pain is usually the last to arrive and the first to go. Because you are pain free does not mean the discs are fully healed, this is why it is crucial to follow the doctors treatment plan.

New Research on Cervicogenic Headaches and the Optimal Treatment Program What is a Cervicogenic Headache? A cerviocogenic headache is a secondary headache, caused by structures in the neck. You may experience pain when moving your head in certain directions and a decrease in neck range of motion. When the cervical spine is out of alignment, surrounding tissues contract to stabilize and protect the neck. When this happens inflammatory proteins are released causing pain in... the neck and head. Cervicogenic Headache Symptoms - One sided back of neck and top of head pain - Associated neck pain - Exacerbated with neck movements - Decreased cervical range of motion - Cervical restrictions - Trigger points in trapezius, SCM, levator scapula, scalenes and sub occipitals Cervicogenic Headache Treatment - Spinal mobilization and manipulation - Deep neck flexor strengthening - Postural training The Research Results Participants had an average of 15.6 Headache days in a month and 18.3 Neck Pain days in a month. 6 Cervical Neck Adjustments > 30% reduction in Headache days a month, similar to the control group (no neck adjustments) 12 Cervical Neck Adjustments > Improvements that were not statistically significant 18 Cervical Neck Adjustments > 50% reduction in Headache days a month (8 fewer headaches a month) These results were sustained and observed at 1 year follow up @ Stevenson Chiropractic

Are you experiencing limited mobility after an injury ? Shortly after a tissue has been injured, it begins repairing and remodelling as scar tissue. Instead of healing in the original fashion it forms in a thick, fibrotic, irregular manner with fibres running in multiple directions. This shortens the tissue causing decreased motion. The longer you are living with scar tissue and impaired mobility, the harder it is to restore it! Graston Technique (GT) therapy is an ev...idence-based form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) that efficiently and effectively breaks down scar tissue formation resulting in improved motion. Evidence exists for the following physiological effects of Graston: Separates and breaks down collagen cross-links, effectively stretching connective tissue and muscle fibers Facilitates reflex changes in the chronic muscle holding pattern (inhibits abnormal tone and guarding, leading to pain reduction via improved sensory input) Alters/inhibits spinal reflex activity (facilitated segment) Increases the rate and amount of blood flow to and from the area Increases cellular activity in the region, including fibroblasts and mast cells (wound healing and anti-inflamation) Increases histamine response secondary to mast cell activity (boost blood flow) When GT is combined with appropriate therapeutic exercises and activities, pain free function is often restored! Visit Stevenson Chiropractic to restore proper motion and get back to living life to the fullest! @ Stevenson Chiropractic

Are you afraid of the cracking sound associated with an adjustment? Do you not like having your neck adjusted? The Activator Method is a safe treatment option used by thousands of chiropractors in Canada. Your chiropractor will either use leg length checks to identify spinal disorders or use their physical exam findings alone. Once a spinal disorder is found, the Activator Method uses a spring loaded device called an Activator to adjust this segment. The Activator delivers... a quick gentle impulse to the spine or extremity joints with the goal of restoring proper motion to a specific segment. Pros 1. The Activator is very specific, and does not require additional twisting of the spine 2. Being so specific it is great for adjusting other small joints in the hands, wrists and feet 3. It is so quick your muscles don't have time to tense and resist the adjustment 4. It has varying degrees of impulses, meaning you can treat infants to people 100+ years old When comparing the benefits of the Activator to a typical chiropractic HVLA (High-Velocity, Low-Amplitude) adjustment, the research shows its not better, or worse. It all comes down to personal preference! Another great weekend learning DNS Part A. This is our third DNS course in the past year. We are signed up for B and C, then we head to Prague for certification! Key Takeaways: Before we make ANY movement, our body must stabilize first. This is automatic and subconscious, but not always in an ideal position. ... EVERY movement should be purposeful with optimal joint centration. Joint centration is when 2 joints align perfectly together . This allows for maximal surface area contact and muscle contraction which: efficiency stamina risk of injury degeneration Postural function is interdependent with respiratory function. - Incorrect posture = incorrect breathing and visa versa It takes 6 months to change your motor coordination. Before you train any muscle with load, it must be stable at rest. DNS helps a variety of people from infants to geriatrics and everyone in between. This approach has been utilized by professional athletes across the world. What a great weekend learning from one of the best chiropractors in the industry! Dr. Len Faye D.C., F.C.C.S.S. (C) Hon., F.I.C.C. - The forefather of motion palpation - how to feel a joint moving, and more importantly if its not moving. Weekend Take Aways:... - I CANT fix you, but I CAN help improve motion. - Joints move around 3 axises (x,y,z), identify the axis of restriction and adjust into it. - SAID: Specific Adaptation to an Imposed Demand - Tissues adapt and change over time and it takes time (6 months) to correct and change tissues back. - Treat the whole chain. Pain occurs at the site of adaptation, not where the root cause is. - Mechanoreceptors overpower Nociceptors = Movement receptors overpower pain receptors > if you restore movement, pain will subside. - Pain is the last to arrive but the first to go = I can get rid of your pain fast, but the dysfunction will take time (SAID). - Read for 1 hour every day - dont stop learning about your passion. #stevensonchiropractic #hamiltonchiropractor #hamiltonchiropractic #hamiltonchiropractors #chiropracticseminar #motionpalpation #learningfromthebest @ Royal Botanical Gardens

With costs of back pain and arthritis reaching $238 billion and $200 billion annually, the health care system is starting to take notice. The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine recognize that "Chiropractors deliver drug-free therapies which is particularly meaningful in light of the countries opioid abuse epidemic."
