RESEARCH SPECIALIST PROGRAM APPLICATIONS As you may be aware, applications for subject POSts are now available on ACORN until August 26th. Most of our programs are Type 2L (Limited), with our Research Specialist program being a Type 3. Please see below for more details on this unique program, if you are interested in applying: The Research Specialist program is designed for students who have demonstrated a particular interest and aptitude for research and who want to complete... a thesis. Admission to the program is based on strong academic performance and expressed interest in research. Students apply at the end of their *second year*, or when they have completed at least 8 credits or more, and begin the program in their third. In addition to applying via ACORN, students must also send in a supplementary application directly to the department via the Research Specialist Online Application: https://www.psych.utoronto.ca/research-specialist-program-o Admission to the Research Specialist Program depends in large part on ones grades in these courses and ones overall academic performance/CGPA. The Research Specialist program is a Type 3 program and, therefore, enrolment is limited to no more than 15 students per year. Eligibility is highly competitive and based on the following criteria. Please note that meeting the following minimum requirements does not guarantee admission: Gr. 12 Calculus Gr. 12 Biology Completion of at least 8.0 FCEs Completion of PSY100H1 with a minimum final grade of 80% Completion of PSY201H1 (or one of ECO220Y1/EEB225H1/GGR270H1/POL222H1/SOC202H1/STA220H1/STA248H1/STA288H1) and PSY202H1 (or one of ECO220Y1/STA221H1/SOC252H1/SOC300H1) with at least an average of 75% across the two of them (competitive grades in statistics is very important to ones application) At least four PSY 200-level half-courses completed (with at least a 78% average across all of them) Applications are due August 26th on ACORN, with supplementary application on the Psych website due by the same date. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS FOR OUR FALL AND WINTER SEMINARS

Undergraduate Psychology, University of Toronto 22.03.2020

PSY 497F Seminar in Human Chronobiology This is an advanced course in biological timing (chronobiology, circadian biology, time memory). Its intent is to probe more deeply into the mechanisms and significance of timing in biology, not only in the study of biological clocks, but also more broadly in the importance of timing in sensorimotor integration, memory, decision making, and health. The topics are organized in a hierarchical manner so that a base of understanding (and a common jargon) can be developed early on with more detailed studies later. Dr. Martin Ralph, Mondays 10 a.m. 12 p.m. in the fall.

Dear students, As you are preparing to register for classes for the upcoming year, you may have seen info shared about a new course we are offering in the psychology department, PSY 203H1: Psychological Research (offered in fall 2019 for the first time). You may also have asked yourself, "why would I want to take a 200-level research methods course if I dont have to?" So, I wanted to take a moment to provide some possible answers to this question. 1. If you are considering... a research-adjacent career or program of graduate study of any kind, having a survey of common methods and issues in psychology research will be critical. In fact, some graduate programs require a methods course. 2. Regardless of whether you have taken many or few psychology courses, your understanding of psychological content from other courses will be enhanced by a better understanding of the methods we use to answer questions. 3. We will practice concrete skills like reading journal articles, APA-style citation and reference, proper paraphrasing, literature searching and critique, all of which will help equip you to read and write better literature reviews and research proposals, common assignments in upper-division courses. 5. The final paper for this course will be written with the close support and feedback of your TAs, a great opportunity for a large 200-level course. If you have any questions about the course itself, please contact me at [email protected], and if you have questions about where this course fits into the psychology program requirements, please contact [email protected]. Have a great rest of your summer, and I hope to see (or see) you in class this Fall! Dr. Metz

**STARTING NOW** Summer Undergraduate Social Work Course - Aging, Law and Policy SWK302H1-S Aging, Law and Policy... This course will examine selected areas in aging that reflect current issues and future directions with respect to law and health/ social policy, and will delve into how they are impacted in the time of COVID-19. The focus will be on essential elements of the law and policy and their links to the context of aging in Canada. The course will consider "issues on the ground" where each topic will be explored from "alternative viewpoints", presenting both a legal and policy perspective with the aim of making connections between law, policy and current best practices. The longstanding debate about whether the consequences of individual and population aging should be viewed as private troubles or public issues continues to influence law and policy in the areas of health care, community services, income security and housing, especially for specific groups defined by gender, class, sexual orientation and ethnicity. Analyses of each area will include an evaluation of the main applications of the law and policies, and students will gain an indepth understanding of the issues discussed and the significance of these issues to older adults. Prerequisite: 4.0 credits Recommended Preparation: This course will be attractive to students from all disciplines but they can expect engaged learning and critical thinking. Workload will be commensurate with a 3rd level course. Distribution Requirement: Social Science Breadth Requirement: Society and its Institutions (3) Timetable instructions: This is an online hybrid course. Lectures will be delivered live weekly (T-R 2-4pm) with portions dedicated for participation, discussion and group presentations. Recordings of the lectures only will be made available afterwards for those unable to attend during class time. Weekly student participation is required through the submission of short reflections in Quercus. Students need to be able to prepare and submit assignments in PDF, word or equivalent format onto Quercus and have the ability to use Zoom for group presentations.
