The German Christmas Stollen dates back as far as the 13 to 1400s. Originally only made of water, flour, yeast and turnip seed oil, it was a heavy loaf eaten during the Christian fasting season Advent. History tells us it wasn’t until the mid 15 to 1600s that the Pope gave permission to use butter instead of oil, which eventually led to the Dresdner Stollen. These days the heavy yeast dough primarily consists of flour, water, butter, raisins, candied lemon and orange peel,... almonds, yeast and spices.It is believed the name Stollen, the German word for a mining tunnel, originated because miners took an early version with them into the mines. It is also said the cake covered in powder sugar symbolizes baby Jesus swaddled in cloth.
