Yes, I definitely knew how this book was going to end but I enjoyed it just the same. Sometimes it's nice being a know-it-all!
Water for Elephants meets The Night Circus in The Magician’s Lie, a debut novel in which the country’s most notorious female illusionist stands accused of her husband's murder --and she has only one night to convince a small-town policeman of her innocence. The Amazing Arden is the most famous female illusionist of her day, renowned for her notorious trick of sawing a man in half on stage. One night in Waterloo, Iowa, with young policeman Virgil Holt watching from the audienc...e, she swaps her trademark saw for a fire ax. Is it a new version of the illusion, or an all-too-real murder? When Arden’s husband is found lifeless beneath the stage later that night, the answer seems clear. But when Virgil happens upon the fleeing magician and takes her into custody, she has a very different story to tell. Even handcuffed and alone, Arden is far from powerlessand what she reveals is as unbelievable as it is spellbinding. Over the course of one eerie night, Virgil must decide whether to turn Arden in or set her free and it will take all he has to see through the smoke and mirrors.
Just a friendly PSA...

October is Canadian Library Month and we feel that it’s a perfect opportunity to recognize some of the incredible people who contribute to making our library the wonderful place it is. Every week for well over a decade, John and Phil have been devoting their Wednesday evenings to assist people with their genealogical searches here in our Local History Department. Both of these volunteers have a wealth of knowledge about researching family trees and utilizing one of the libraries subscribed resources, Ancestry. If you’ve come to a road block in your genealogy investigations or you are just starting out and don’t know how or where to begin, please drop by at 6:00 on a Wednesday evening and these gentlemen will be happy to help you out! Thank you John & Phil for your commitment to this valuable library service.

#tbt Stirling's Volunteer Fire Department circa 1912. The Village of Stirling's first fire equipment was a hand operated pump. A bucket brigade put water in its tank and several buckets were kept with the pump. A bell rang as it was pushed along. In the winter of 1908-09 a steam fire engine was acquired. The upright steam boiler was drawn by the first owner to arrive with a team. Before leaving the Mill St. Fire Hall the wood in the engine's firebox had to be ignited to provi...de the steam power. Two hose reels were manually operated. Later a gasoline driven pump replaced the steam power. About 1932 a new fire truck was purchased after hydrants were installed. In 1979, equipment for the fire department included two pumpers and a rescue van which carried a resuscitator, fire blankets and a K-12 rescue saw for cutting cement or steel. There is a book for everything . . . Somewhere in the vast Library of the Universe, as Natalie thought of it, there was a book that embodied exactly the things she was worrying about. In the wake of a shocking tragedy, Natalie Harper inherits her mother’s charming but financially strapped bookshop in San Francisco. She also becomes caretaker for her ailing grandfather Andrew, her only living relativenot counting her scoundrel father.... But the gruff, deeply kind Andrew has begun displaying signs of decline. Natalie thinks it’s best to move him to an assisted living facility to ensure the care he needs. To pay for it, she plans to close the bookstore and sell the derelict but valuable building on historic Perdita Street, which is in need of constant fixing. There’s only one problemGrandpa Andrew owns the building and refuses to sell. Natalie adores her grandfather; she’ll do whatever it takes to make his final years happy. Besides, she loves the store and its books provide welcome solace for her overwhelming grief. After she moves into the small studio apartment above the shop, Natalie carries out her grandfather’s request and hires contractor Peach Gallagher to do the necessary and ongoing repairs. His young daughter, Dorothy, also becomes a regular at the store, and she and Natalie begin reading together while Peach works. To Natalie’s surprise, her sorrow begins to dissipate as her life becomes an unexpected journey of new connections, discoveries and revelations, from unearthing artifacts hidden in the bookshop’s walls, to discovering the truth about her family, her future, and her own heart.
