Projet Amal Stories of Hope By Ryoko Hashizume Im excited to participate in the development of the MCM-St. James new project Green SAGE Vert as an Int...ern from the Social Service program at Dawson College. I consider myself privileged to be a student at my age. I immigrated to Canada in 2001 from Japan. Montreal became the place where I have lived the longest. I was born near the ocean and grew up surrounded by the mountains and river until finishing high school in Fukushima prefecture, northern Japan. Today I realize how much I was nurtured by that environment. The forest, water and sun affect our physical and emotional wellbeing. Homegrown vegetables, mountain plants and wild mushrooms, rice from the community, fresh fish and seafood were on the family table growing up. Good quality of water and a 4km walk to school every day helped as well! My sensitivity to odours, rain, the sound of the wind over a rice field in fall, an owl in complete darkness at night, the sensation of my foot dipping into cold river water or warm mud, all come from my childhood. However, I didnt recognize the richness at all back then - my only wish was to leave for the big city! I studied and worked in Tokyo and then began backpacking in Asia, Oceania, Europe, the Middle East and Morocco - what a precious time. However, memories of travelling and earlier life in Japan were pushed aside for quick and smooth adjustment to my new life once I settled in Canada. I thought my memories were unworthy material or even potential obstacles to integration. I had and still have critical views toward some of Japans traditions, systems and so on. Yet, like other immigrants, I miss many things. It is where I come from and I miss not only family and friends but also the humid smell of soil in the forest. I often had a sense of belonging when I was in Japan. During the Corona pandemic, I was hit very had with nostalgia for the first time. During my travelling, peoples hospitality, resilience and joy touched me the most despite what I saw as their hard situation and inequality. Some places where I was welcomed are now in ruin, such as Syria. Also, 2011s earthquake, tsunami and nuclear power plant accidents hit my hometown. It changed so many peoples lives and the environment forever. More than 200 children in Fukushima were diagnosed with thyroid cancer. The whole series of problems caused by the accidents are far from over. The accidents also revealed so many problems that were hidden for a long time. What can we do? Having dialogue helps connect people to people and a dot to a dot. Having a chance to see things differently as well helps us understand and feel part of a global community. Many problems and challenges we have are actually interconnected. I hope I can do something to build a resilient community with positive energy and a sustainable society for all. At Montreal City Mission I will start by supporting the On the Move campaign for the Just Solutions Legal Clinic and engaging with Green SAGE Vert. Thank you for your time. Im eager to learn and meet people at MCM and St. James.

Projet Amal Stories of Hope By Nadia Rezkallah .I love people and I love to give back to my community!... As many of you, I had difficult moments during the lockdown ..suddenly, I was closed in our apartment with my husband and 4 small kids..it was not easy at all. However, I thank God that I have a home, family and friends to rely on and spend time with. I came to Montreal in 2017 with 3 kids and my husband. At the beginning I had many challenges and difficulties facing a new world, new tradition, culture and attitude. With the positive energy and the support of my friends, I started a full new life of dreams to realize I started to volunteer in different community organizations in Montreal until I got to know Montreal City Mission and their amazing work and social activitiesI started to feel a sense of belonging to Montreal, I feel more responsibility for what is happening hereI want to add my part to make our city more welcoming for everyone. I feel part of the MCM community and I love to participate in their - our ! - activities and eventsohhh I cook too for these event within the WWD catering and its fun to meet others therewhile cooking and after that when I watch the guests eating my food. Its complete satisfaction! During the Covid-19 lock down, we the WWD women who are part of the sewing circle at MCM - took a decision to help our neighbours face the pandemic and started to make masks for front line organizations. I wanted to show my solidarity with this great country, Canada, and to the Canadian people by making masks. It is not a huge thing but it is my hearts work to show my affection and gratitude to all those who have helped and supported me since my arrival with so much love and kindness, especially Montreal Mission City by giving me the chance to meet new wonderful people. *** Nadia prepared a delicious lentil soup to offer to passers-by at the unveiling of the Homeless Jesus sculpture last winter on the St. James Square. Her wise words to a journalist at the time were: We are all part of the human community and need to support one another. Nadia you are certainly an important member of our community and we thank you for your presence, energy and spirit!
