St. Leonard's Place Peel is seeking applications from individuals interested in volunteering on our Board of Directors. St. Leonards Place Peel (SLPP) is a non-profit charitable organization that provides transitional and reintegration housing for men dealing with situations of homelessness, mental illness, addiction or conflict with the law. For 50 years SLPP has delivered a variety of programs and services that provide residents with a safe and healing environment where t...hey can rebuild their lives, maintain their wellness, and reintegrate back into society. Our board members help to fulfill the organizations vision, shape strategy, and contribute to policy development, financial processes, risk management, and regulatory compliance. Board members typically serve for a term of three years. This is a great opportunity for individuals looking for a meaningful way to give back to your community. Community members with experience serving on a policy/governance board and with expertise in the areas of primary health care, finance, government relations, and collaborative and integrated service delivery initiatives are especially welcome to apply. At St. Leonard's Place Peel, a healthy diet is a key part of therapeutic care. Each day our full-time kitchen staff provide over 100 residents with three nutritious, freshly cooked meals that meet the Canada Food Guide requirements for optimal physical and mental health. And our nutrition and cooking classes help residents build new habits and skills that contribute to restoring their overall sense of health and wellbeing.
Sir Robert Williams was instrumental in establishing St. Leonards House in Windsor in 1962. Two years later, Sir Robert moved his family to Bramalea where he soon became involved with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. His altruistic nature led him to open his home to inmates who had nowhere else to go. A Board of Directors was formed with like-minded, motivated and dedicated members of the community. Two-and-a-half acres of land were donated by Bramalea Limited. And on June 21, 1971, Sir Robert Williamss dream became a reality and St. Leonard's Place Peel opened its doors to 21 men. Today, with 117 beds, it is one of the largest transitional houses in Ontario.
Supportive Housing St. Leonard's Place Peel combines housing and many services in one location, which is a cost-effective model for providing intensive support for helping people live more stable and productive lives. It has been shown, through cost-benefit analysis, that the supportive housing model is preferable to other approaches that encourage the homeless population to cycle through emergency shelters, hospitals, detention facilities, rehab centres and the streets. ... The positive social, economic and community impacts of this housing approach have been studied and documented numerous times.
