Following a lengthy and thorough search, St. Mark’s College at UBC and Providence Health Care are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Scott Kline (PhD) as the inaugural Visiting Scholar in Ethics. St. Mark’s College and Providence Health Care have united to address the need for enhanced ethics in Catholic health care in Vancouver. This new position will support the local Catholic health care community dedicated to meeting the physical, emotional, social and spiritual n...eeds of those served through compassionate care, teaching and research. The Visiting Scholar in Ethics position is a component of the Catholic Health Care Ethics Fund established in 2019 by the Archdiocese of Vancouver. It is a collaboration to provide joint teaching, learning and health care delivery by enhancing learning opportunities in Ethics through clinical experiential learning, academic research, and teaching at St. Paul’s Hospital and St. Mark’s College. Currently at St. Jerome's University-University of Waterloo, Dr. Kline will begin his one-year Visiting Scholar tenure in January 2021. This partnership between Providence Health Care, the St. Paul's Foundation and St. Mark's College was made possible by the generous support of the Archdiocese of Vancouver. https://stmarkscollege.ca//dr-scott-kline-named-inaugural/

Shortly before the pandemic, the Colleges started a small community garden on the property. Faculty member Dr. Nick Olkovich reflects on what the garden has meant to him over these strange months. "As time went on our near daily trips became routine. We’d pack our tomato ties, our scissors, and big ziplock bags that I’d wash after each use. Soon we lost access to a hose and so we started bringing a watering can that one of us would fill six or seven times behind St. Mark’s P...arish whenever Fr. Rob wasn’t hearing outdoor confessions. As summer finally started to arrive in Vancouver the garden became a hot spot of activity. We met neighbours who told us they liked our greens (thanks?); neighbours we traded stories and plants with; other gardeners on the UBC campus who envied the shade our lettuce got; neighbours’ children and their pets. I began running into work colleagues, one who tended two of the College’s four garden beds, and others who still had access to the main building. These chance encounters and the short conversations they promptedso everyday and yet so oddly meaningfulbroke up the monotony of daily Zoom calls and online happy hours. Soon enough the garden started to produce and everyone we ran into or visited got a bag of lettuce or clippings of chard. What had started out as a pet project had become a way to connect."
