Natural recovery of the sediment within the St. Marys River has been occurring since the 1980s. Environmental regulations and pollutant-reduction initiatives have led to a significant decrease in contamination from industrial and municipal sources. Biodegradation and the burial of contaminated sediment are other key factors that have led to improved sediment quality. Subsequently, the benthic invertebrate community has largely recovered over the past 3 decades. The improvement of benthic populations will continue to reflect the trends in sediment quality in the St. Marys River. http://bpac.algomau.ca/

Good News! The findings from our recently announced Conceptual Site Model (CSM) has indicated that there is a low potential for adverse effects in benthic invertebrates, fish, wildlife and humans that are exposed to contaminated sediment in the St. Marys River. Stay tuned for the updated CSM that will be made available soon at: http://bpac.algomau.ca/
Indicators of water quality and an important food source for aquatic species, the benthic invertebrate community has been making a strong comeback in the St. Marys River over the last 30 years. Although there is still work to be done, ongoing efforts to restore the benthic zone throughout the entire river is a high priority. For more information, visit: http://bpac.algomau.ca/
