In the ancient calendar of the church year there are certain days that we don't hear about a whole lot anymore: things like Octaves, Rogation Days, and Ember Days. Today is one of the three Autumn Ember Days or Michaelmas Ember Days in our church year. The Ember Days have very ancient roots and always constitute a Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday near the changing of the seasons. The word Ember comes from the Anglo-Saxon word "ymbren", meaning circuit or revolution. ... Ember Days are set aside primarily for fasting and penitential prayer where we pay particular attention to asking God for forgiveness and praying just a little harder than normal. They are also days on which we remember those about to be Ordained to Holy Orders in the church. Finally, because of their connection to the natural seasons they are days on which we give thanks to God for the earth, that we might be good stewards of it and to give thanks for what the earth gives us, namely, food. Notice the theme of the Autumn Ember Day collect from the BCP: "O LORD Jesus Christ, who in thy earthly life didst share man’s toil, and thereby hallow the labour of his hands: Prosper all those who maintain the industries of this land; and give them pride in their work, a just reward for their labour, and joy both in supplying the needs of others and in serving thee their Saviour; who with the Father and the Holy Spirit livest and reignest, ever one God, world without end.
