Still thinking about that Print Subscription?! There’s still time! Last but not least, our fourth artist in the subscription is our own ED, Christeen Francis @missprints Christeen is a printmaker and musician originally from Montreal. She did her undergrad at NSCAD and spent a decade in NYC where she ran her own screenprint shop. She’s committed to social and political print that engages with local communities and is a member of @justseeds artist coop. She usually works in screenprint, woodcut, and installation. Happy Thursday friends!! Next in our featured artists that are part of the SMP Print Subscription is the one and only Christine Koch!! Christine is a painter and printmaker with a background in literature and art history, based in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Her work often combines printmaking and painting to create dream-like geological landscapes pulled from her own explorations in the natural world. The ones below specifically being pulled from three different series she d...id; an expedition aboard the CCGS Amundsen, a Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker, one in the Torngat Mountains of Labrador and the final from Gros Morne National Park in the Tablelands. This week's Printer of the Week is Marwin Begaye, Associate Professor of Painting and Printmaking at the University of Oklahoma's School of Visual Art! "His research has been concentrated on issues of cultural identity, especially the intersection of traditional American Indian culture and pop culture. Intro to Screenprinting on paper with Pepa Chan @pepa.chan will take place on Tuesday evenings: Dec 1st, 8th and 15th from 6-9pm. This workshop focuses on the basics of one-colour printing on paper. SMP is excited to announce our next workshop, Intro to Relief Printing, taught by member and staff, Rachel Gilbert. Rachel is a recent undergraduate of the Visual Arts program at Memorial University and a grad student of Museum and Gallery studies. She works in various mediums and explores themes of nature and self-reflection. Rachel is also the artist behind most of the woodblocks you've been printing at our live events! Have you been wanting to try printmaking but haven't ...had the chance yet? Relief is the perfect medium to start with. It's a relatively quick form of printmaking and the meditative feeling of carving will have you hooked for life! ;) This course will cover the basics of relief printing, such as drawing for relief, carving blocks, setting the press, inking and printing. Participants will first work on a drawing that they will then carve and transform into a one colour print. It will take place over two Saturdays from 1-4pm ( Nov 28th and Dec 5th). SMP is excited to announce the second of our screenprint workshop series: One Color Print on Fabric, taught by member and co-founder of the Screenprint Pilot Project, Mimi Stockland. It will take place over three weeks on Tuesday evenings from 6pm-9pm on Nov 3rd, 10th, 16th. This will be an intro workshop that focuses on the basics of screenprinting on fabric. Participants will come away with a knowledge of coating and exposing screens, preparing a file for printing, printing... and cleanup, as well as a one color print on fabric. This series will be taught in person but is limited to 4 participants to ensure everyone can safely distance while also participating fully. To register fill out the google form linked here, and we will follow up to confirm your participation and arrange payment. SMP will provide ink, screens, and test fabric. St Michael's is up and running again finally! Want to come to an Open Studio event and carve a block in our space? Every month SMP has an open studio on a Thursday night, where we invite anyone to come hang out and make art in our space. You don't need to have any previous print experience, it's a chance to come check us out and for us to connect with our community. When: October 29th, 6-830 PM This open studio we will be hanging out, drawing and carving blocks, which is of c...ourse all optional. We will be providing blocks and tools to carve as well as paper. You are welcome to bring any supplies you have that you would like to use. To ensure everyone's safety this event will be limited to 7 participants.
