July 1814 Battle at Chippewa
For some insight on slavery in the 1800's, may I recommend Stowe's book written during the period.
Today is Sara Calder Day! On this day we celebrate Sara Calder, her grandparents were James Gage and Mary Davis, whose Stoney Creek homestead was site of the Battle of Stoney Creek. As a result of Sara's passion she became the first president of Women's Wentworth Historical Society. As president she advocated the purchase and preservation of the Gage Homestead and helped open Battlefield Park. In addition, she along with the Women's Wentworth Historical Society was responsib...le for the creation of the Battlefield Monument in 1913. Later the Women's Wentworth Historical Society joined forces with the Wentworth Historical Society. The larger society evolved and was renamed Stoney Creek Historical Society in 1930. Picture here is a photograph of Sara Calder and her gravestone found at Hamilton Cemetery (York Blvd).
Today is the 78th anniversary of the ill fated raid on Dieppe in WW2. Out of , close to, 5000 Canadians who landed only around 2100 returned. Of the rest, 200 were killed, with another 500 dying of their wounds and the rest became prisoners of war. Recently it was discovered that this was meant as a "Pinch Raid", where commandos were to have gotten into German naval headquarters, in Dieppe, and taken possession of newer Enigma coding machines. Unfortunately, due to a series of misfortunes, the landing was a failure. These are pictures of the Dieppe memorial parkette on Hamilton beach strip.
