I thought for my last Business Beat column of the year I’d reflect on the year that was, from the perspective of the business community. First, there are some really sad stories People who put everything they own on the line, and then borrowed the rest, only to run face-first into a Global Pandemic. None of us can imagine what it is like, to lose everything unless we’ve lived it. The same can be said for many employees, who were suddenly a lot less secure than they thought.... Thankfully we live in a Country that has been able to respond and provide a lot of support, though I know it won’t be enough for some. And now, with vaccine on the horizon, we are in the second wave. Think of how maddening it would be if you were in business and had to watch while people took chances with the simplest public health directives to wear a mask, to properly distance, to wash your hands, and to watch your business being shut down again, because of it. So, what can you do? Here’s a list: 1. Go out of your way to shop locally, even if it’s online, keep it local. a. When you keep your money in town you are making a personal investment in the future of your community, you are showing your pride in what we have built. 2. Give to the local charitable, not for profit, and arts community. They are really hurting. 3. Buy a gift card. 4. Leave a positive review. 5. Like or follow or share a social media post of a local business. 6. Tag a friend if you see something they might like. 7. Get take-out. 8. Buy from local artists and artisans. I hope you have time this holiday season to reflect on this horrible year, find some things to be thankful for, cherish that zoom call, and that you’ll LoveLocalPtbo Happy Holidays, Happy Hanukka, Happy Kwanzaa, Gungshi Shin Nien, Feliz Navidad, Salaam alaikum, Minoganawaamdig Niibaanaamaang miinwaa Nimkoodaading Merry Christmas.

Sandra has had a tremendous im...pact on our Chamber, taking our advocacy activities from a monthly Policy Meeting, to a Nationally recognized position of influence. At the same time Sandra has elevated our entire approach to communications, along with the look and feel of our brand. Here are some pictures of Sandra pointing at things... As a parting gift we compiled a list of things that were said by her, about her or near her, including: "Could they not have found a better way to communicate this than all these words" "I love being around you, it makes me feel smart" "I'm impressed with myself" "Don't laugh, it encourages me to be worse" "Just repeat it in a way that makes sense" "I was in awe, but then I got bored" "I can look stupid on demand" "You're like a really intense Care Bear" "Today I can not get struck by lightning"

Congratulations to Darlene Little and the Lakefield Legion Remembrance Day Committee on coming up with a very workable plan for this special day. While there wi...ll be a select few able to gather at the Lakefield Cenotaph at 11, they will be broadcasting the ceremony live on the Legion Facebook page. Here’s a link https://www.facebook.com/Royal-Canadian-Legion-Branch-77-Lakefield-172957650025215 The Legion has already laid out the wreaths and they will be there the entire day, so you can stop an pay your respects anytime. Well thought out. When I offer my two minutes of silence today I’ll be thinking of my Grampa Harrison, who emigrated to Saskatchewan before the First World War, went back and fought for England, got married to Gramma Nellie, and then returned to Saskatchewan after the War. And I’ll be thinking of my Uncle Reg Harrison, who has an amazing story of survival as a bomber pilot in the Second World War. If you are interested in his story, the Saskatchewan Government did a project several years ago, recording interviews with veterans to capture their stories, and this is the half hour interview/documentary they did with Reg. It’s extremely well done. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=swPHBA9yQmA And while I’m here here is a link to the news story about Uncle Reg being made an honorary member of the Snowbirds a couple of years ago. Reg flew in Squadron 431 during the War, which is now what the Snowbirds fly under. This day was a total surprise to Reg. One of his buddies just said Hey Reg, there’s an air show in Moose Jaw, why don’t we pop down You can imagine how proud he was that day! https://www.facebook.com/stuart.harrison.39750/posts/10160879281300231 And just before you go this is a news story about him getting to fly a Tiger Moth again https://www.ctvnews.ca//crash-harrison-93-pilots-same-mode It’s so important that we all try to mark this day in some small way, and I treasure the fact that I have these special things to share. Reg meanwhile, will be missing marching in only his second Remembrance Day Parade, some heart trouble one year, and of course The Pandemic this year. But I know Reg will be marking the day somehow in Saskatoon, and so will we Uncle Reg, so will we, right across the Country, in your honour. See more
