WATERLOO REGION RECORD: After saying a few months ago they had no plans to change those speed limits, which are 50 km/h unless otherwise posted, Premier Kathleen Wynne and her Liberal government have made an abrupt U-turn. The one-size-fits-all, prescriptive attitude of this government suggests a big mistake is about to be made. A sense of disconnect between the law and common sense will emerge, and that creates a whole new level of danger. http://www.therecord.com//5295759-caution-needed-on-speed/

GUELPH MERCURY: Politicians can set any speed limit in the imaginary world where it matters. In the real world, people typically drive at the speed that fits the design and feel of the road. Research and local experience has shown that raising or lowering a posted speed has little impact on speeds. It just changes the number of people who can be ticketed for speeding. Lowering the speed limit may result in inconsistent speeds, which is less safe. "With uniform speed, drivers are less impatient, pass less often, and are less likely to tailgate," said Bob Henderson, regional manager of transportation engineering. http://www.guelphmercury.com//5295813-lowering-speed-limi/

THE WINDSOR STAR: There is absolutely no case to be made for lowering the speed limit on city streets to 40 km/h. None. Nada. No study has suggested going from a default speed of 50 km/h would suddenly make cul de sacs safer. Which is why, six months down the road, the Liberals will be trying to ram this unneeded, unwanted and unrealistic proposition down our throats. http://blogs.windsorstar.com//the-stars-view-reducing-spee

TORONTO STAR: "Never mind the non-compliance from irate drivers if speed limits appear increasingly impractical. The bigger risk is continuing carelessness from pedestrians who are increasingly putting themselves in harm’s way. But the likely result of imposing a general speed limit of 40 km/h across every city in Ontario would be impairing traffic, not improving outcomes." http://www.thestar.com//why-reducing-speed-limit-to-40-kmh
