Stop the Cuts 15.11.2020

Send a letter to Saskatchewan decision-makers who have the power to ensure our frontline health care heroes have the fair wages they deserve - we need to create a health care environment that attracts and retains health care providers - every letter counts:

This is one way governments could pay for more services without making cuts to services.

"While the Saskatchewan government argued it had no obligation to follow the intent from the federal government, the Social Services Appeal Board ultimately sided with Rosnes in its decision. The CESB Shaylee Rosnes has received, to a maximum of $6,000.00, and subject to any funds held back for income tax purposes, or deducted for pandemic related expenses, is to be exempted as her earned income, stated the written copy of the decision Rosnes received." https://globalnews.ca//sask-government-pay-back-emer/amp/

"Sadly, we hear from political pundits that both the NDP and Sask. Party platforms will create a tremendous financial burden for us. However, there is little mention of the fact that Saskatchewan deficit budgets have prevailed for too many years without any significant improvement for front line health care. There seems to be no recognition that the current state of affairs has already cost all of us. Can our health care system really afford another four years of austerity? W...e desperately need a government that will put aside the old ways of deflection, disrespect and silence. We need a government that will recognize and embrace their role as both funder and regulator of OUR health care system. They need to use this authority to direct fairness into a sector where it is desperately needed. Together we can motivate an end to the chronic understaffing that exists we cannot afford to ignore the hardships prevailing in our health care system." See more

We know cuts don’t affect everyone equally. With cuts to public services and transportation, among others, it’s good to see new web-sites emerging that explore the impacts of austerity on different sectors of the population. See some of the stories here. https://womenforsaskatchewan.ca/

"Flook was a member of an activist group called Stop the Cuts, which opposed austerity cuts in the Sask Party’s 2017 budget. One day after the group staged a protest at the premier’s elite fundraising dinner in Regina, Gormley singled out Flook on-air, identifying her workplace and contact information. By broadcasting contact information of his political opponents, Mr. Gormley is subjecting Canadian citizens to a targeted campaign of harassment and intimidation, Flook’s 2...017 complaint claims. Flook’s complaint states that Gormley repeatedly spelled out her name and email address on-air, encouraging his listeners to fill activist inboxes with emails to ‘bog down these people’. Flook wrote that Gormley broadcast the workplace phone number and email address of another activist, and urged people to contact her and told them not to be nice. He basically sent them after me, Flook told PressProgress. I did start getting phone calls at work, various calls, people first wanting to confirm who I was and then they would just want to yell at me and various things."

Cuts ... a reminder. The Sask Party govt made a promise of 4 more years of austerity. Here are some of the last 4 years of austerity/ cuts. Pls add anything missing: Saskatchewan Assured Income for Disability (SAID recipients cut $20 month) Transition to Employment recipients cut by $20/month plus capped rates for utility costs Phase-out of the Sask Rental Supplement program which assisted low-income and disabled recipients by $84-$305/month to pay their rent. Excellent resources here regarding the loss of public transit in Saskatchewan and beyond. There are several audio links in this piece, please listen and share this widely. Transit is on the ballot. "It’s now been more than three and a half years since the provincial government announced that it was shuttering the Saskatchewan Transportation Company, and more than two years since Greyhound Canada announced that it was withdrawing from Western Canada, leaving prairie resident...s with few options for intercity transit. Now, in the midst of a global pandemic urban transit services, which were already struggling in many cases, are in crisis mode. There are municipal and provincial elections in Saskatoon this fall they will be the first since STC was shut down and there is little doubt that transit will figure prominently locally with the contentious nature of the planned evolution of Saskatoon’s bus service to a Bus Rapid Transit service." Posted without comment, a quote from the premier: "I feel that people who are involved in employing people across this province should have a say in some of the policies that we have that impact their industry, given that they employ a number of people in communities right across Saskatchewan, Moe told the Leader-Post."

Oh how the stories continue. Please make the shuttering of STC an election issue. Call all parties and ask if they would support public transportation for rural and remote areas of Saskatchewan.
