HUMANS #ÉgalitéDesChances Par Pierrette, Je viens de la belle Ville de Québec où j’ai grandi et poursuivi mes études. Étant jeune, mon père avait une écurie. J’ai fait de l’équitation et skié dans le Parc des Laurentides pendant des années. C’était pour moi très ressourçant.... Au collège, je m’occupais du journal étudiant où j’ai pris goût au journalisme. J’ai fait partie de la première cuvée du programme de Journalisme et Information, avec une majeure en Science Politique, à l’Université Laval. Avec mes collègues en Journalisme et Génie, nous avons mis sur pied une radio communautaire universitaire où j'animais une émission qui traitait de mon sujet préféré: les enjeux sociaux! Mon travail d’été auprès de jeunes filles délinquantes m’a particulièrement marqué. Affectées par des problèmes familiaux, de pauvreté, et/ou d’une mauvaise intégration, elles avaient besoin qu’on leur vienne en aide pour sortir de leur situation instable. C’est dans cet esprit que j’ai poursuivi ma vie professionnelle. Mon premier emploi était au ministère des communications ou j’ai créé un guide du citoyen. Je suis ensuite venu à Montréal avec mes deux filles. Produire des documents pour que les gens connaissent les enjeux qui les guettent est ma façon d’aider. J’ai ensuite créé mon entreprise : ‘Plurimedia’, ainsi que mon OBNL: ‘l’Institut Pour le Progrès Socio-Economique’. J’ai ainsi pu lier mes priorités: l’information & le développement social. Après avoir été directrice générale adjointe du Centre de Référence du Grand Montréal pendant un an, mon expérience comme directrice générale au GCRM a débuté alors que le Centre devait renforcer les bases financières, par la diversification de son financement, mais également par sa pérennisation. De plus, l’importance d’innover et de rehausser le positionnement du Centre ainsi que de négocier le virage numérique sont devenus des orientations que j’ai mis de l’avant, entre autres, dans le cadre de la planification stratégique du Centre. Cinq années après le dépôt de ce plan au Conseil d’administration, je pense que nous atteint nos objectifs, notamment avec le service 211 dont le site web www.211qc.ca répertorie plus de 5000 organismes sociaux et communautaires du Grand Montréal, mais aussi le service téléphonique 2-1-1 qui vient en aide directement aux citoyens qui cherchent des services publics, gratuits ou à faible coûts, pour combler des besoins sociaux. On parle du pouvoir de l’information au niveau politique et on l’oublie au niveau social alors que cela représente une opportunité pour atteindre une réelle valeur d’équité et d’égalité des chances. STORIES Syria Raconté par Mahmoud Alkhatib My name is Mahmoud Alkhatib, a 6th year, senior medical student at the Faculty of Medicine at Damascus University in Syria. With one final year of studies to complete my six-year program in preparation for a career in medicine, I am dreaming of a beautiful, peaceful Syria.... Just like many Syrians, I dream of the day that we will be able to rebuild our country and our future. To do that, we need hope, we need support and we need to be together as global citizens. And yet, our realities are very far from this vision. At present, Syria is the homeland of millions of refugees, perhaps an equal number of internally displaced peoples, and the homeland of the worst humanitarian crisis in the 21st century. We, as Syrian medical students are responsible for something in this tearing war. We should stand firm in the face of brutality in every way we can, and that’s why we decided to stay. You do not have to feel the pain, just seeing it in others’ eyes could be a breaking point that shouldn’t break us, but strengthen and motivate us. As doctors, our pivot role is to conserve the health care system from collapse. Despite all the hardships, the shortage of stuff and materials, hospitals are still functioning in the capital, Damascus, and many other cities around the country. University hospitals are still providing training for new doctors and students like us. Moreover, we are volunteering to assist in these hospitals in our summer vacations so that we gain more experience and take a hand in saving this country’s life. Likewise, we are volunteering in organizations that are made to help those in need, one of the best is the Syrian Arab Red Crescent which has many sections such as emergency, child protection and more. I personally chose to volunteer at the child protection department since children are the future of Syria, They are the plants of tomorrow. In this department, we visit displaced families and try to provide all the possible kinds of help and happiness for their children. I also have friends who are at the emergency department to help succor wounded people, bombings victims and so on. One last thing, academically, we believe strongly that research represents an important component toward a brighter future. Therefore, I and a group of my colleagues started learning and reading as much as we can, and even participated in teaching dozens of our colleagues about the fundamentals of research and, more specifically, Evidence-Based Medicine. Moreover, we published some studies in international journals, which has generated increased interest among our friends in such topics. We now see an emerging level of inquiry about research methods and opportunities even as the country is at war among new students within the medical program at Damascus University.
