Regular eye exams in children are so important. There are so many reasons but here are 3: 1. Learning is 80% visual. If your child can't see well they will likely have trouble learning 2. Vision has to be checked in each eye individually. One eye might be strong and compensating for the other and parents and child themselves are often unaware. Early intervention gives the child the best outcome 3. Optometrists are not only checking if the child needs glasses but also ensuring the back of their eyes (retina, optic nerve etc) is healthy. Are your glasses fogging up while you wear a mask? This is a very common problem but luckily it can easily be fixed using our tips. 1. Make sure your mask fits you well and is sealed properly over your nose. 2. Try raising your mask up over your nose and placing your glasses on top of them. This will create a seal and stop the fogging. 3. Place a folded peice of tissue under the top of the mask to help create a seal. 4. Wash your glasses with some dish soap and rinse with water. My child should know his or her letters before their first eye exam. FALSE. Optometrists are trained to examine children as young as 6 months. As they get older we do try to determine how well they can see but if they don't know their letters we can use shapes or symbols. Parents often worry that if their child is not confident about letters or shapes that the eye exam will be inaccurate and they may be given glasses unnecessarily. This is not true at all. We don't base the need for glasses only on how children respond during vision testing.
