The Rock of Cashel (aka St. Patrick’s Rock) is a historic site in County Tipperary. According to legend, the rocky outcrop originated in the Devil's Bit, a mountain 30 km to the north. St. Patrick confronted the devil in a cave and the two began to fight. The devil bit a hole out of the mountain to give himself a path to escape. He later spat out the rock and it landed in the middle of the plains of Tipperary.

Imagine being carried down the streets of Toronto by thousands of supporters! This was one of many triumphs for an Irish-Canadian who played a prominent role in the city’s history. James Beaty was born on this date in 1798 in Killeshandra, County Cavan. He immigrated to Toronto (then called Little York) on St. Patrick’s Day in 1818 and opened a shoemaking business on King Street. He also owned the Toronto Leader newspaper where he advocated for religious freedom. Beaty’s rep...utation for fairness saved his life. During the rebellion of 1837, soldiers were ordered to shoot him for his support of William Lyon Mackenzie but they refused. Beaty would go on to be a Member of Parliament from 1867 to 1874. George Brown from The Globe was one of his adversaries in politics and business. During the Typographers Strike of 1872, Beaty sided with the workers and was carried down King Street by supporters. He was hailed as a hero of the working class. A statue in his honour now stands near the corner of King & Jarvis.

On this date in 1845, Frederick Douglass spoke in Dublin. The time the statesman, abolitionist and former slave spent in Ireland proved to be 'transformative'. "I have spent some of the happiest moments of my life since landing in this country". For the first time, Douglass felt that he was being treated "like a man and not a color. Douglass had great admiration for Irish politician Daniel O’Connell. He gave himself the moniker, ‘The Black O’Connell’ after seeing the master orator in action. The Wormhole of Inishmore is one of the most unique attractions on the Aran Islands. The rectangular shaped pool is cut straight from limestone and can only be accessed by walking along the cliffs south of the ancient site of Dún Aonghasa. The sea water ebbs and flows at the bottom of the cliffs and into the pool.
