50 years ago, on October 4, 1970, the dynamic, beautiful, and world-famous singer Janis Joplin died. Fans around the world were stunned by the sudden loss of her powerful spirit and soulful voice. In the fall of 1970, her Pearl album was in the final stages of being recording at Sunset Sound Studios in Hollywood California. During that period, she and her Full Tilt Boogie Band, lived at the Landmark Motor Hotel nearby. Stratford guitarist John Till recalls that on the nigh...t of October 3, 1970, they all returned to the motel after having spent the evening working on a new song, Buried Alive in the Blues. The Band had recorded their instrumental backing tracks while Janis practiced her vocal along with them, but the hour was getting late so Janis decided to wait until the next day to complete her vocal track. However, Janis did not show up at the studio as planned, but her car was still at the motel and people were beginning to wonder where she was. It was soon discovered that she had died in her room, apparently from an accidental drug overdose. After a week of shock and mourning, it was decided to spend a few more days to complete the album. 'Buried Alive in the Blues' was included as the album's only instrumental song, and soloing by guitar, piano and organ were substituted for the vocal part that Janis never had a chance to sing. The Stratford Perth Museum’s exhibit Road to Woodstock features some unique and precious memorabilia related to Janis Joplin. The exhibit has been extended through this fall. On a personal note, I clearly remember this day in 1970. When we heard the news, the dorms at Kansas City Art Institute, where I was a 1st year student, rang out with her powerful voice for days and weeks after. Little did I know then that I would later create an exhibit that features Janis Joplin, and that I would have the distinct pleasure of working with her guitar player John Till in its development. He shared stories about his career, including his time with Janis, that have brought authenticity and little-known vignettes to the exhibit. I am forever grateful.

Oh! The tedium! All that dipping and blotting! The Stratford Perth Museum celebrates INTERNATIONAL FOUNTAIN PEN DAY!! Did you know that the invention of the Stylographic Pen is attributed to Duncan MacKinnon, a pharmacist from Stratford? Patented in 1876, MacKinnon’s invention contributed significantly to the development of the stylographic pen and ultimately to the fountain pen. ... No one using an ordinary pen constantly, or for any considerable portion of the time, can fail to feel the want of something better adapted to ordinary writing than steel or gold pens. The constant dipping, which not only takes time, but is fatiguing; the liability of blotting, and in the case of steel pens, their failure soon after they get into good condition for use, are all serious objections which existed from the first days of pen and ink until the invention of the complete little instrument shown in the annexed engravings. Fig. 1 shows the MacKinnon fountain pen in actual use: Fig 2 is a sectional view showing the internal construction, and Fig. 3 shows the pen about to be closed to be carried in the pocket or laid upon the desk. Scientific American, April 24, 1880. MacKinnon established the MacKinnon Pen company in Brooklyn, New York. He showed his invention to Alonzo T. Cross, who made some slight alterations to the design and filed a new patent. It was the beginning of the Cross Pen Company that is still producing writing instruments today. Mark Twain received a MacKinnon Stylo as a gift. He was impressed with its performance and enthusiastically declared it "the best fountain pen yet invented". It is thought that he used this pen during the writing of Huckleberry Finn. In 2019, the museum received a exemplary collection of MacKinnon stylographs, that with extensive research and publications on stylographs and fountain pens. If you want to know more, there are lots of sites online that celebrate the International Fountain Pen Day.

Our honey is ready! It’s a sweet fundraiser for us during these tough times. And because we love you, read below for the best honey cake recipe EVER (at least according to the person and her children writing this post). So, cancel all of your plans today, come to the museum to pick up a jar ($10 for 250ml or $20 for 500ml) and have a honey cake party immediately!!! Honey Cake Recipe (Apples for Jam cookbook by Tessa Kiros)... INGREDIENTS 150 g(5 oz) butter 115 g(4 oz/ cup) dark brown sugar 175 g(6 oz/ cup) honey 200 g(7 oz/1 cups) plain (all-purpose) flour 1 teaspoons baking powder teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 tablespoon finely chopped rosemary leaves 2 eggs, beaten LEMON ICING 250 g(9 oz/2 cups) icing (confectioners’) sugar 100 g(3 oz) butter, softened 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest 2 tablespoons lemon juice METHOD Grease and line the base of a 22 cm(8 inch) spring form tin. Put the butter, brown sugar and honey in a small saucepan and add 1 tablespoon of water. Heat gently, stirring once or twice, until the butter melts and the sugar dissolves. Leave to cool for 15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 180C (350F/Gas 4). Sift the flour, baking powder and cinnamon into a bowl and add the rosemary. Add the honey mixture and eggs and beat until smooth. Pour into the tin and bake for 3540 minutes, or until a skewer comes out clean when you poke it into the centre. Leave in the tin to cool completely. To make the lemon icing, sift the icing sugar into a bowl. Add the butter, lemon zest and juice and 1 tablespoon of water and beat until smooth. You might like to add a few more drops of lemon juice after tasting it. Spread over the top and side of the cake. The cake softens as it sits and will keep well for up to a week in a cake tin.
