Club Championships B Doubles The Stratford Tennis Club's annual Club Championship Tournaments continued after rain delays. The 'B' Doubles events faced a two week rain delay before being completed. With over 60 spectators spaced throughout the Park the 'B' Doubles finals had a true tournament feel. The Ladies 'B' Doubles final saw first time teammates face off for the title. Michele Thomson (2019 Mixed 'B' Champion) partnered with Kukiko Yamauchi to both make their deb...ut in a 'B' doubles final. They would face Judy Hart and Betty Groenestege who also were making their final debut. Thomson and Yamauchi downed Joan Aitcheson and Edda Lang 6-1 6-1 in their semi-final, in a match that was much closer than the score would indicate. Hart and Groenestege advanced to the final with an excellent match, downing Marilyn Holmes and Stacy Smith 6-4 6-4. The final saw Thomson and Yamauchi take advantage of their tournament experience. Hart and Groenestege showed early match nerves and Thomson and Yamauchi pounced taking the first set 6-1. With some excellent gets and net play Thomson and Yamauchi continued to control the match. A tighter second set also went to Thomson and Yamauchi by a 6-3 score. With the 6-1 6-3 victory Thomson and Yamauchi laid claim to the 2020 Ladies 'B' Doubles title. The Men's 'B' Doubles final was also a match between first time partners. Two time Men's 'B' Singles champion Wayne Carney teamed with 2019 Men's 'B' Doubles champion (with Kurt Eickmeier) John Noble to take on Dave Fair and Jim Wilson in the title match. Carney and Noble defeated the father/son team of Mike and Matthew Furlong in their semi by a 6-4 6-0 score to advance to the final. Fair and Wilson went three sets in their semi , edging Pat McCarroll and Murray Schiedel 3-6 6-3 6-3 to claim their spot in the title match. The final had everything you would want in a final. Great play, momentum shifts, both teams having set and match points, and some clutch serving. The first set had Fair and Wilson get off to a lead before Carney and Noble broke back to send the set to a tie breaker. Carney and Noble came back to steal the set , taking the tie breaker 8-6. Fair/Wilson steadied in the second set and evened the match with a 6-2 win. The third and deciding set was nip and tuck all the way through. With Fair serving for the match Noble and Carney fought off three match points at 6-5 to send the match to a tie breaker to decide the champion. Both teams had match points that they fought off before a Fair volley winner gave Fair/Wilson the third set tie breaker with a 9-7 score. The 6-7 6-2 7-6 victory gave Fair and Wilson the 2020 Men's 'B' Doubles championship. And gave the large crowd an exciting match to cheer on for hours. Men’s and Ladies Doubles Club Championships This Weekend The entry deadline has passed and the numbers tell us that it will be a busy day on Saturday. There are 18 men's teams (significantly higher than last year) and 11 ladies teams (up slightly from last year). All teams will begin in the 'A' draw with those losing their first round being slotted in the 'B' draw. Matches are 2 out of 3 sets, though with the large number we will once again have any 'B' matches on Saturday th...at split the first two sets play a super tie-breaker (first team to win 10 points, ahead by 2 or more points) instead of a third set. This is for 'B' draws on Saturday only. The first 4 men's matches will begin at 8:30 am on Saturday. The first ladies matches will be at 11:30 am. All semi-final matches will be played Sunday morning, with the men's and ladies 'A' semis at 9:30 am and the men's and ladies 'B' semis at 11:30 am. All finals will be on Sunday night at 7:30 pm. The full draw and match schedule will be posted Friday morning. I will email the Saturday start times on Friday. Please arrive close to your start time. Due to a bit of an outbreak of COVID in the area this past week we ask all teams to play with safety in mind. No high 5s. No close congregating. We cannot risk the rest of the tennis season so please follow social distancing protocols. See more
