Edmonton man charged with possession of child pornography : A 25-year-old Edmonton man is facing one count of possession of child pornography in connection to a... month-long investigation that commenced in early September. Detectives began an investigation into Nicholas Baglole-Gaudet, 25, of Edmonton, in September, after child pornography allegations involving the accused were brought to their attention. Investigators executed warrants at Baglole-Gaudet’s southeast Edmonton residence on Sept. 9, and confiscated a laptop computer, which investigators later confirmed contained child pornography. Baglole-Gaudet, who operated an unlicensed child daycare home at the time, has since been charged with one count of possession of child pornography and one count of accessing child pornography. Investigators do not believe any of the pornographic images discovered on his laptop involve any of the children left in his care. Currently, the accused has been released with several conditions including no contact with any child under the age of 16 except in the presence of a parent or legal guardian. http://dlvr.it/RmLJP1

Strathcona County RCMP provide tips to prevent vehicle thefts Strathcona County, Alta. - As we progress into the frosty winter season, the Strathcona County RCMP is once again urging motorists to make proactive choices that can prevent auto theft. Do not leave vehicles running unattended, for any period of time, and remove keys from vehicles.... Driving a warm, toasty vehicle is tempting when it is cold outside. It only takes a moment for a potential thief to jump into a running and unattended vehicle and drive away. Strathcona County RCMP have the following safety tips to keep your vehicle secure, not only in the winter but the warmer months as well: Never leave a running vehicle unattended. If your keys must be in the ignition to warm it up, drivers should remain with their vehicle. Install a remote starter if possible, however, always make sure the vehicle is locked. Use a steering wheel lock to deter thieves. Never leave children unattended in a running vehicle. Never leave spare keys or garage door openers in or around your vehicle. If your keys are stolen, immediately change the locks Always lock the door leading from a garage into a residence Auto thefts can occur any time of the year, but police see an increase during the colder months, says Constable Chantelle Kelly of the Strathcona County RCMP. Don’t leave your vehicle running unattended, as it takes a fraction of a second for it to be taken. So far in 2020, police have investigated 164 stolen vehicles in which 25% have been determined that keys were left in the vehicle or left running unattended. The RCMP encourages residents to report any suspicious activity or vehicles immediately by calling the Strathcona County RCMP at 780-467-7741. Strathcona County RCMP reminds residents to be vigilant when online shopping Sherwood Park, Alta. The holiday season is fast approaching and many people have already began their shopping. As a result of the pandemic, more people will be turning to online shopping to complete their gift giving. Online shopping is not only convenient but with next-day delivery, great deals and the endless catalogue of purchasable items, online shopping has only grown in popularity. While the ...increased availability of online shopping is convenient, it also makes it more lucrative for scammers to trick buyers into paying for goods they won’t receive or obtain their personal information for financial gain. Being a safe online shopper means taking extra security precautions when purchasing items and thinking before you click. Here are some tips for protecting yourself online: Don't purchase anything while using public Wi-Fi; shop using your own data connection or a trusted network. Beware of ads encouraging users to click on links. If you receive an enticing offer, do not click on the link. Instead, go directly to the company’s website to verify the offer is legitimate. Research retailers before purchasing from them. Check for reviews and their return policy. Only purchase from sites using HTTPS rather than HTTP. If you've done some shopping already, watch your financial statements for any unauthorized purchases. Be sure to use strong passwords. If a deal is too good to be true, it probably is. For more information on scams contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca or toll free at 1-888-495-8501. Strathcona County RCMP investigate destruction of two intersection safety devices Sherwood Park, Alta. - Strathcona County RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS) is currently investigating the destruction of two Intersection Safety Devices (ISD) that occurred in October 2020. Global Traffic Group contacted police after the ISD located on the southeast corner of Sherwood Drive and Granada Blvd was disabled on Oct.11, 2020 at approximately 1:30 a.m. A second ISD located on... the southwest corner of Wye Road and Brentwood Blvd was disabled on Oct. 24, 2020 at approximately 1:00 a.m. The two devices were seized and upon inspection, police determined that both ISD’s were destroyed by the discharge of a firearm. The targeted destruction of these ISD is a public safety concern, as these intersections are located in both residential and high traffic areas. These devices are used to monitor, and photograph vehicles that speed or run through red lights. These devices have proven to reduce red-light running and speeding thereby reducing the number and severity of crashes. We will keep this investigation active until we determine who is responsible, says Supt. Dave Kalist, Officer in Charge of the Strathcona County RCMP. We are relieved that no one was injured as a result of discharging a firearm in our community. Strathcona County RCMP are asking anyone that may have been in the area during these occurrences that can provide surveillance footage, dash cam footage or may have seen anything suspicious to contact them at 780-467-7741. If you have any information about who may be responsible please contact police or if you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com (http://www.p3tips.com/) or by using the P3 Tips app available through the Apple or Google Play Store. ~Please be advised that this account is not monitored for follow-up questions, Inquiries should be directed to the Strathcona County RCMP @780-467-7741 Please keep all comments clean, vulgar language will result in comment being deleted. #FactFriday! Did you know that the striped skunk seems to be aware of the repulsive nature of its odour, as they will usually not spray in their own dens or con...fined spaces? These slow-moving creatures rely on their scent gland for security as their short legs keep them from outrunning their predators. Their scent gland is about grape-size and secretes a foul-smelling odor. The spray from this gland is able to reach up to 6 metres away, and the wind may carry it as far as 1 kilometre! The striped skunk has thick, black, sleek fur, with a white stripe beginning at the back of its head, forking out at the shoulders and going down each side of the back to the base of the tail. There is a small stripe down the middle of their face, to the nose-tip, as well. Their long claws enable the striped skunk to tear apart logs in their search for food and dig out burrows of mice, etc. Striped skunks are omnivorous, eating a variety of food. Their diet may consist of ground squirrels, small rabbits, mice, insects and various plants. Summer diets are mostly insects, while fall and winter diets are equal amounts of animal and plant foods. They will also eat bees and wasps (which they kill with their front feet) and they are very fond of grasshoppers and insect larvae. They usually forage in the late afternoon and through the night, but can be seen at any time of the day. Skunks generally live in abandoned dens and they will use one of the chambers for a nest, which they line with leaves. They get the leaves to the nest by tucking them under their body and shuffling along with the leaves held between their legs. By March, breeding has begun and the young are generally born in May with 4-6 in a litter. Newborns have no fur but are fully haired by 2 weeks. Their eyes open at about 3 weeks of age. At about 7 weeks, their mother takes them to forage for food and they are weaned by 8 weeks. They remain with the mother for the autumn even joining her in the winter den often. Striped skunks select a deep den in which to spend the winter. At about 0 degrees, the mother and youngsters will enter the winter den. Males may join their family when temperatures reach -10 Celsius, or they may den with other males - or be on their own. Any kind of a grouping may be found in a winter den. They certainly may emerge briefly from their den at any point during the winter season. Skunks are out of their winter torpor (inactivity) by March. Skunks are not aggressive animals. They generally try to retreat from people and large predators. If you come across one who is growling, hissing or stamping its front feet you might want to vacate the area, as something has angered her/him! As always, if you find injured or orphaned wildlife, please contact us at 403-946-2361. Photo credit: Don Delaney
