"At the end of the day, it is still all about personalization and building community and relationships and we have learned there are many ways to do that." In today's blog article, Director of Strategic Enrollment Management and Communications, Lara Unsworth '95, reflects on the innovative ways STS builds meaningful connections within our community despite a global crisis. Here, your child will belong. They will be known. Known not only by name but for who they are and what helps them flourish. Your child will find their people and make life-long friends not only with their peers but with their teachers, who are instructors, mentors, and coaches. Faculty and staff at STS make time for one-on-one interaction with each student, both in and out of class. We believe that personal attention, and time spent, helps develop students’ belief in themselves. In this video, hear Strathcona-Tweedsmuir students talk about the STS family and how their teachers are helping them thrive in new ways. Encouragement and personalized education from committed and talented faculty makes the STS learning environment right for everybody.

While the time-honoured tradition of gathering as a community has been impacted by the pandemic, the importance of coming together to honour the sacrifice of the heroes before us remains imperative and more important than ever. Yesterday, our community came together virtually to protect the importance of Remembrance Day, and we were honoured to have STS Alumnus Captain Darcy Foo '13 as a guest speaker. View the complete virtual Remembrance Day Ceremony here: https://youtu.be/8fzbZKLI2yM

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a cherished community member with an outstanding legacy to the Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School (STS) and Calgary community, Mr. E. David Dover ’48. David had a long history with Strathcona School for Boys and he maintained a lifelong affection for his alma mater on Riverdale Avenue and for the friends he made there. His mother, Mary Dover, was the daughter of A.E. Cross and Helen Macleod (granddaughter of Colonel James Mac...Leod, Commissioner of the North West Mounted Police) and a founding trustee of Tweedsmuir: An Academic School for Girls. Dover house, one of our four houses rooted in the history of our School and Canada, is named in Mary’s honour. STS greatly benefitted from David’s council. His leadership with the School started as Head Boy in Grade 9 and grew significantly from there. David was central to securing the financing for STS as Chair of the Board, and he was also one of the founding trustees of the STS Foundation which holds the assets of the School in trust for future generations. It was through his leadership in fundraising that the Atkinson Bequest of $250,000 was increased to $1,000,000 and made possible the construction of Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School where it stands today. Mr. Dover continued his interest in STS as his four children, John ’78, Carolyn ’79, Julia ’85 and Sarah ’87 attended. He followed all the major changes and building projects and willingly accepted an appointment to the STS Foundation Board of Directors in 2002. He and his wife, Frances, were regular visitors to the annual school commemoration of Remembrance Day and they enjoyed participating in the Alumni Dinners. In 2008 he was bestowed the highest honour given to an Alumni: the Distinguished Alumni Award. Mr. Dover contributed much to Calgary as well; he was President of the Chamber of Commerce and he obtained ownership and management of the Calgary International Airport (YYC) for the city in 1993. From 1995-1996 he was Chair of the Canadian Airports` Council. Mr. Dover will be long remembered for his commitment to STS and for his impressive leadership and achievements on behalf of a very grateful school. Our deepest condolences are extended to the Dover family. Please see David’s full obituary here: https://calgaryherald.remembering.ca//e-david-dover-108109

Our students’ academic outcomes are exemplary not only while they’re here at Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School but also in post-secondary studies after graduation. Why? Because the Alberta curriculum is brought to life through applications to the real world. In this video STS students explain how they learn from their mistakes and uncover happy accidents as they explore. You’ll hear about design projects, from prosthetics to stress-reducing music, and how kids of all ages di...scover capacities they never imagined they had. STS students understand the why of what they’re learning, and have plenty of opportunity for curiosity, working individually and on teams. They delve deeper, they make connections, they create solutions, they learn how to push their own boundaries for better thinking. https://www.strathconatweedsmuir.com/sayyestosts-2/

Every year on #orangeshirtday, the STS community wears orange in support and recognition of the spirit of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and to promote discussions about the history of residential schools. Our hope is that by empowering students through knowledge and participation in Orange Shirt Day, our community will continue to embrace the spirit of Reconciliation and recognize the important role we all play in acknowledging the destructive legacy of residential schools in these critical times. #orangeshirtday2020 #everychildmatters

This year marks the 35th year of STS supporting the Terry Fox Run "Marathon of Hope". While STS will be celebrating the Terry Fox Run differently this year, we are excited to engage our community in this tradition in new ways! To kick off a week of Terry Fox Runs and activities in our PE classes, our community traveled back in time sporting big hair, bright colours, and shiny sequins bringing us back to the 80's! Families and alumni are encouraged to contribute our meaningful tradition of fundraising for cancer research on behalf of the STS community. Donations can be made at http://www.terryfox.ca/StrathconaTweedsmuir

Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School 15.06.2020

Terry Fox spent 6 months on the road during his Marathon of Hope; some of which was in the hospital when he had to stop his run part way across Ontario. He couldn’t wait to be back in his own bed, eating his mom’s cooking and hanging with his family. It’s family we turn to in our time of need, when we seek comfort and support. This year marks the first time in 40 years when the Terry Fox family won’t be coming together in communities across Canada to run in celebration and s...upport. It also marks the first time in 35 years that the STS community will not be getting together to do the same. We encourage you and your family to run Your Way on Sunday September 20, 2020 (whatever it is, just #TryLikeTerry). We also hope each student will actively participate in our activities at school next week and work hard in fundraising for the Terry Fox Foundation. Donations can be made at: www.terryfox.ca/strathconatweedsmuir

We're reminiscing back to sunny summer days on our country campus. Two Wheel View offered a 4-day bicycle mechanics and trail-riding skills course in partnership with STS Summer Camps. Participants received four days of basic bike mechanics skills, including how to change a flat tire, adjust brakes, and diagnose shifting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MffotB23CUM&feature=youtu.be
