Happy Holidays from everyone at Strathmore Fire Department! Here are some tips to ensure your holidays are fun and safe: - Place your Christmas tree away from heating vents, radiators, stoves, fireplaces and burning candles. - Dispose of real trees as soon as the holidays are over, or as soon as the needles start to fall. ... - Choose the right light for the job: light strings and other decorations are rated for indoor or outdoor use. Ensure that indoor lights and decorations are only used inside. Read the package instructions and do not exceed the recommended wattage. - Avoid plugging too many lights and decorations into an outlet. Overloaded circuits can overheat and start a fire. - Turn off all holiday lights before you go to bed or leave your home. The holidays are officially here! While the holiday season is exciting, it also poses various safety risks. Real Christmas trees add a festive touch to the season. However, they also pose a significant fire risk.... It is important to recut the stump of your real tree when you get it, and make sure you water it everyday. Trees that are not watered regularly start on fire easier and burn quicker than watered trees. Watch the below video to see the difference in how watered vs unwatered trees burn. https://youtu.be/xr6b9b8FYKk

Annually, Strathmore Fire Department goes to the burn tower in Vulcan County. The burn tower uses steam to imitate smoke, allowing firefighters the opportunity to practice rescue drills in a safe environment. Even though this was a chilly day, the firefighters appreciated the great learning opportunity!

November is Carbon Monoxide Awareness month. Here are some facts about carbon monoxide: - Fuels that burn like wood or charcoal, or make heat or energy using carbon-based fuels (natural gas, propane, oil, gasoline or diesel engines) can produce a gas called carbon monoxide. Malfunctioning or improperly vented fireplaces, furnaces and portable and stationary generators can produce carbon monoxide. - You can’t see the gas. You can’t smell it. But carbon monoxide can make you re...ally sick or kill you. - A carbon monoxide alarm will let you know if unsafe levels of this poison gas are in your house. - You need an alarm outside bedrooms and on each level of your home. - Push the test button each month to make sure alarms are working. - If you hear the alarm, get outside immediately. Then call the fire department. Don’t go back inside unless the firefighters say it is safe. Ensure your home and loved ones are protected against carbon monoxide!

Winter is here, but the ice is still thin. Thin ice can be unpredictable and inconsistent, and should be viewed as a safety hazard. It is impossible to tell how thick the ice is at any given time and it is very unpredictable and dangerous to go on. Although there have been no incidents yet this season, we would like it to stay that way. Stay Safe! Stay Off The Ice! If you would like more information about ice safety you can visit www.redcross.ca/icesafety
