In 2017-18, 1 in 8 households in Canada was food insecure, amounting to 4.4 million people, including more than 1.2 million children living in food-insecure households. Sonja Yli-Kahila, Coordinator of the Food Share Network, will be moderating a panel at the 2020 Good Food Summit | Food Future: Rooted in Change titled Tackling Food Insecurity: A Just and Equitable Future. This session will explore the big questions related to food insecurity and how individuals and agencies ...can take action to decrease food insecurity in the region. Food insecurity is caused by larger systemic inequities and challenges that need to be addressed at their roots. During this session, we will be connecting with visionary leaders that are trying to tackle some of these injustices, as well as from those with lived experiences of food insecurity. Today you'll be hearing from Dr. John Higgenbottam, a clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist who has held senior clinical leadership positions in British Columbia in...cluding Vice President, Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences Centre, Vice President, BC Rehab and Vice President, Riverview Hospital. We'll also be hearing from Dr. Elizabeth Plant, whose current roles include the Cowichan District Addiction Medicine Consult Service (AMCS), AMCS Community, outreach at the overdose prevention site, and developing substance use supports for youth. This event opens the conversation on what is needed to strengthen communities on all levels to address the intersections of mental health, addictions, and brain injury with the development of an integrated provincial service delivery plan which considers disparities between the quality, options, and accessibility of services and supports across the health authorities. The increased number of brain injuries resulting from overdoses is concerning. These individuals are often younger and may require a higher level of care. Communities need to be able to respond. People are able to do the work of healing when the community they live in is strong and can provide the services they need. In turn, the more a person thrives, so too, will the community. Each year the Good Food Network gathers to celebrate and strengthen their efforts towards creating sustainable, healthy and just food systems in the Capital Region.
