But there’s reason for her confidence. The food is very good, full of surprises and some clever fun [Yuyina] works with her chef torquing traditional recipes into creative contemporary dishes and gives street food a complete makeover. Hot off the press! Thank you so much Mia for all the kind words in today’s The Vancouver Sun and The Province. We’re honoured. You can find the review in print or view the digital copy online

What’s in a name? The quality and depth of flavour of XO sauce is apparent in its name. XO is actually a Hong Kong shorthand for high-quality, prestige, and luxury. Think about the price of fresh shrimp and scallops, and taking all of that luscious seafood, drying it, and then making it into a jar of sauce. A small jar of XO sauce is big in umami flavour. So why did we name ours XO XO sauce? We increased (more than doubled!) the amount of dried shrimp, scallops, ham, freshly chopped chillies, and fried garlic in our take on XO to pack even more flavour into each jar. XO XO also symbolizes all the love and care we put into our sauces. We now sell our house-made XO XO! $38 for 1 jar and $100 for 3 jars.

Tomorrow is the last day to enjoy your Dim Sum Auntie menu before we make the switch over to our Holiday Celebration Tasting menus on Dec 23! Featured on our Dim Sum Auntie dinner menu is steamed black cod with duo house-pickled pepper, which is our take on the traditional Hunan dish . Instead of using tilapia or other fish common for this dish, we use black cod for its velvety texture and buttery flavour which contrasts nicely against the bright and spicy house-pickled peppers.

Five facts about our Street Calamari from Owner Yuyina and Chef Stephen : We don’t use any batter on the calamari so you can enjoy the real texture of the calamari tentacles We marinate the calamari for 24 hours with our house blend of spices before we fry it The calamari is fried twice, which produces a super crispy exterior while keeping the interior very juicy It is served with lime which adds great brightness to the dish... We serve the calamari on custom-printed paper with our logo - the red stool - which is reminiscent of the plastic red stools of street vendors in Yunnan Today is the last day to enjoy our street calamari on the Yunnan Auntie menu before we switch over to the new Dim Sum Auntie menu.

We asked owner Yuyina why she decided to feature sweet and sour pork, a dish often regarded as a westernised Cantonese dish, on this week’s Butcher Auntie menu. Yuyina shares the inspiration behind our sweet and sour pork and what ingredient is added to make the dish so special: The first time I tried sweet and sour pork was not in China. It was when I went on a trip to America when I was 13 old and tried sweet and sour pork at a Chinese restaurant inside a food court. It... was so confusing to me because it definitely did not taste Chinese. I thought to myself, how can I create a similar dish that is more reflective of the flavours I grew up eating? I did a lot of research to understand the construction of this dish, and it made me think: I’m a Mandarin Chinese living in a western world, and seeing how west and east meet so harmoniously, I’m going to create my own version of sweet and sour pork by adding Yunnan buckwheat stick to create the most unique texture and marry these flavours. It is not just a dish, but a reflection of cultures I grew up in. See more

Having your Street Auntie experience at the chef’s counter is in our opinion the best way to enjoy it. The reason why we built our restaurant around the chef’s counter is because we want you to feel like you’re sitting right in front of the street aunties in Yunnan while they prepare your food for you right before your eyes. We want you to see your dim sum basket getting prepared, hear the sounds of the woks, and smell the infusion of fresh scallions and oil for the final savoury course of (Shanghai noodles with green onion dressing) all at the counter

The sea urchin dumpling is an item we’re extremely proud to serve to all our guests as a starter. This golden dumpling marries traditional dumpling pleating techniques and our appreciation for fresh, local ingredients.

What’s in a name? Drawing inspiration from her childhood experiences growing up in Yunnan Province, China, where street-food vendors are commonly referred to by a term of respect and affection known as ‘Street Aunties’, Owner Yuyina Zhang designed the Street Auntie experience around five different menus, each reflecting an important part of food culture in Yunnan Ocean Auntie, Butcher Auntie, Yunnan Auntie, Dim Sum Auntie, and Vegetarian Auntie. Street Aunties in Yunnan are synonymous with warmth, hospitality, and most importantly, great food, and we hope to bring you that experience to you in Vancouver.
