Nonprofit aims to help local shelter end homelessness for 10 people A nonprofit organization is helping a local shelter in the fight to end homelessness through charitable donations. The Ryan Foundation of Omaha will match dollar for dollar the $100,000 Transformation Grant that Humility Homes & Services was awarded by the Quad Cities Community Foundation, says a news release.... This award will allow the shelter to launch and fund their Supportive Housing Pilot Project for three years, housing 10 individuals from the community experiencing chronic homelessness and a history of arrests, as well as people who have needed emergency treatment for a behavioral health disorder. More than 60 years ago a Black teen from Malvern C.I. was told to stop dancing with a white girl on a Buffalo TV show. Toronto exploded. The camera panned the dance floor, focusing on Clayton Johnston partnered with 15-year-old classmate Patty Banks. That’s when things degenerated. Western New York viewers were appalled at the sight of Clayton, one of the few Black students in his high school, dancing with a white girl. WGR-TV’s phone lines lit up. Irate callers demanded the... couple be separated. Cameras continued rolling as a student, instructed by Fagan, hesitantly strolled into the mix, tapping Clayton on the shoulder and urging him to leave the dance floor. Puzzled, Clayton asked why. The response embarrassed and humiliated him. The youngster slinked off the dance floor, bolting from the studio, angry and confused, cooling off in the rain. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, George Boyd was the first Black national news anchor on CBC Newsworld, a 24-hour news channel that launched in 1989. Among his love for reporting, Boyd has written for radio, television, motion pictures, plays, and also became a songwriter for his radio play,God is My Warden. Given only 68 years to live, Boyd continues to inspire aspiring young Black journalists and minorities to dream bigger than they ever have.
