This year our routines have been shaken up more than any of us would like. Humans are creatures of habit. We like to know what is coming, we like to know what to do and where to go. It is comforting. This year, nothing is routine except the fact that change is around every corner. But we have made it through, we are in the second last week of December! ... Traditionally, this is when our routines start to go out the window quickly. The kids are off school. Work is winding down. Our meal planning is focused more around chocolate & cheese than fruits & veggies. And the only real activities we have planned is which holiday movie to watch & if we hope to send the kids outside that day. But then we get into sloth mode. We lose track of the days, we lose momentum, our clothes feel tighter, our energy drops even further. We think we are ‘resting’, but it doesn’t come with that energy boost that a rest should come with. While this year has been a big pile of crap for the most part, let’s not let everything go this last week. If we sink into some of our regular routines, we can create space for the things that will truly energize us this holiday season. How hard is it to slow down when you feel you are the one responsible for keeping the wheels on the cart? Do you feel responsible for everyone & everything in the household? Do you feel you NEED to be the one on top of the laundry, the meal planning, the cooking, the cleaning, the school activities, the lunches, the homework, the clothing stock, the grocery shopping, the craft & activity time?... Is there any of those activities you can delegate to your partner? Have them solely responsible for the laundry or the lunches or homework duty? Even taking one of those ‘responsibilities’ off of your plate can feel like such a relief. But the key is you have to release the need to control that task & let your partner handle it in their way. Trust me as a control freak that is hard for me too. We get into burnout and stay in burnout when we try to control too many things & the chronic stress of it eats away at us. Holding too many spinning plates in the air & keeping them all going the same direction all day long is EXHUASTING! Prioritizing the plates that you enjoy handling will keep you feeling more satisfied. And delegating a couple others will feel so good. It also helps your partner feel like they are helping & they want the best for you always. What is one thing you can hand over control of for the next week? I have two common reactions when I am triggered and burnt out. I withdraw or I lose my shit! Neither of which are helpful in any situation really. But when you are burnt out and trying to work or parent it is hard shit and you have nothing left.... These are only some of the things that can trigger a burnt out mama. I'm looking at you Mama! I see you are tired. You are overwhelmed. You are feeling defeated & disinterested in the things you loved. I see your stress is maxed out. You are anxious for the future, both next week, next month & the next decade.... I feel for you. I feel the pain of your frustration with your lack of control. I feel your guilt for the short temper with the kids when you are touched out. I feel your sadness & longing for the way things were even last year. Here is what I want for you to feel & embody. Strength inside & out. Energy to keep your spirits high & your to do list accomplished. Grace for your down days & love for yourself always.
