One size does not fit everyone it actually is a not so good fit for most. Then why do try to bring this approach to the workplace? Why are we still preaching the industrial era mantras in a world that is in continuous evolution, just like the people who are in it? I am always glad to find articles that remind me that we need to lead people, by respecting who they are instead of what we think they should be (and I often share that insight to entrepreneurs). This is where str...engths-based development and the results of the CliftonStrengths assessment are so powerful. They are researched, tried and tested approaches that allow people to quickly hone in on the important stuff. YOU ARE UNIQUE Strengths-based development recognizes that everyone is unique. Imagine, using the results of their basic report (the Top5 Signature themes), that the chances that someone has the same top 5 talents themes in the same order, is 1 in 33 million! It is this uniqueness that makes us so impactful and it is my belief that we should embrace this reality. This actually means that in all of Canada or the entire state of New-York, there is statically little chances that you meet your strengths twin. Not many tools out there are able to help you that level of uniqueness. This means that even if you are dealing with programmers who are building the same type of code and programs, how you work with each one and what will motivate and energize them will be completely different. DEVELOPING POTENTIAL Strengths-based approach is also powerful to creating strong teams as they are to be used for development, not evaluation. CliftonStrengths shares areas of talent, but talent like muscles must be developed, exercised and honed; this is the reason that it cannot be used as a unit of measurement. Imagine having conversations about becoming better, reaching your greatest potential, making your unique contribution, instead of talking about what went wrong, where you are weak, what you should fix. I was really happy to have had the opportunity to attend Gallups presentation on the 7 strategies on how to create a strengths-based culture. They shared some great insights and engaged in a good discussion. I am always glad to find articles that remind us of the reasons that strengths are so powerful to creating incredible teams. The two main reasons for me is that strengths-based development recognizes that everyone is unique, and this is confirmed that the chances that s...omeone has the same top 5 talents themes in the same order, is 1 in 33 million! It is this uniqueness that makes us so impactful and it is my belief that we should embrace this reality. The other reason that I think that the strengths-based approach is so powerful to creating strong teams is that strengths are neutral they are neither good nor bad which essentially means that it is up to us to flex our muscles to make them awesome. It is rare that we can start with so much potential and that our only limit is our willingness to create the habit of leading with strengths. Oh, how this article speaks to some of my core beliefs mainly to the belief that we cannot be great at everything and although we can do things, it does not mean that well be great, good or even mediocre at it. My belief is that we will thrive is areas where we have the most talents this is why I decided to get certified as a strengths coach. This is something that I learnt fast as I played competitive sports. I was excellent in certain roles, really good at some positi...ons, ok in others. The realization that I was not excellent in every job, every team and under every leader also became obvious in my many positions and roles when I was stuck with managers who wanted me to do things their way, in positions that did not allow me to be myself or in organizations that tried to make everyone the same. Although I can write, it does not mean that I am as quick or effective as others. Although I am an entrepreneur and can generate sales, it does not mean that I naturally see of sales opportunities or that I get excited by the prospect. Although I can run, it does not mean that I am built to win the next Ottawa Marathon.
