Stride Mobile Physiotherapy 14.01.2021

In honor of Falls Awareness month (and the coming cold, slippery weather), we wanted to make sure and get this out before outdoor places and walkways become snowy, icy, and slippery! Remember to always take it slow and, walk like a penguin! How do you do this? 1. Bend knees slightly and keep your feet flat... 2. Extend your arms out to the side to keep your balance (keep your hands OUT of your pockets!) 3. Take SLOW, small, well thought out steps (you can even shuffle!) Thank you to Alberta Health Services for the great poster and quick video on how to walk safely on ice! Check it out here: https://youtu.be/LHaWGibGwyk You can also get more information from the Canada Safety Council here: https://canadasafetycouncil.org/safety-tips-for-winter-wal/

Stride would like to thank all of our clients that have called to cancel when they are feeling unwell, or think that they may have come into contact with someone with COVID. This not only helps keep us safe but, more importantly, keeps all of our clients safe too! Thank you!

The first week of November is Falls Prevention Awareness Week and we wanted to make sure share some information and (a few) tips to stay healthy! Did you know that falls are one of the leading causes of hospitalization and loss of independence? What puts you at risk of having a fall?:... - Previous falls - Icy or snowy walkways - Taking multiple medications - Poor Eyesight (make sure your wearing your glasses!) - Clutter or loose floor coverings (like rugs) What can you do to make your home safer? - Stand up slowly and don’t stand until you feel stable. If you feel dizzy, don’t stand up! - Make sure the lights are on - Install grab bars in the bathroom - Wear safe footwear (avoid walking around in socks) Here is a link to the Government of British Columbia page covering Falls Prevention: https://www2.gov.bc.ca//disease-and-injury/fall-prevention Here is another website that has some good tips on how to avoid falls: https://www.lifeline.ca/en/resources/fall-prevention-guide/.

Since there is a lot going on with school starting back up and fall routines settling in, we wanted to wait until mid-month to talk about how September is Dementia Awareness Month. There are many great things we can do to help! We can reach out to our loved ones, we can volunteer, we can even donate to the different societies that offer education and support for those caring for or living with dementia. For more informaiton, check out these helpful links: https://alzheimer.ca/en/Home https://www.alz.org/ca/dementia-alzheimers-canada.asp

Click the link below to enjoy watching this previously filmed Seated Strength session with Becky! This strength class is great for anyone who feels uncoordinated or off balance. It helps to get your arms and legs moving together! Great for people post-stroke, brain injury, or who just feels their hand-eye coordination is getting worse. It is done in a chair, so you can join even if you cannot stand or get tired standing! BUT most of these movements can also be done standing to make them more challenging! https://youtu.be/Zm_q2EhDgs0
