MOST Team Continues to Evolve The St. Thomas Police Service Mobile Outreach Support Team would like to introduce their new clinician. Please join us in welcoming Karolina! Karolina joins our team to fill a void left after former clinician Yvonne moved on to a new opportunity last month. We look forward to a new and exciting chapter with Karolina and Brianne building upon the great success our CMHA response team has in support of vulnerable individuals in the community alon...g with Liaison Officer PC Jeremy Linker. This winter, the MOST team will be able to enhance their support to the vulnerable population by supplying some basic immediate needs in the form of gift cards and vouchers. The Team will supply gift cards in small denominations that will allow individuals to purchase food, basic medicine, personal care products, hand warmers or a hot cup of coffee. The team will decide when and in what amounts the cards are to be distributed on an individual at need basis. The funding to buy the supplies was made possible by an application made to the Civil Remedies Grant which makes the MOST team possible. Initially the money was budgeted for ongoing training however impacts of Covid 19 have resulted in the cancellation of several training opportunities leaving the team with a small surplus in their budget which they felt would best be used to support our most vulnerable who struggle to support themselves.

Last week the Downtown Foot Patrol Unit teamed up with City of St. Thomas By-Law Officers and Southwestern Public Health Inspectors to conduct a COVID-19 education campaign in the downtown. The team attended approximately one hundred and twenty five locations over the five days speaking with owners, employees and shoppers. Just as we had hoped, no infractions were laid and only one warning was discussed over a situation that was easily rectified. Business owners and employee...s had the opportunity to ask as many questions as they wanted and received thorough information regarding the Reopening Ontario Act. The education team did notice that some directions being given to local stores by their corporate offices did not align with the current Orange-Restrict measures in our city. Ultimately the store must follow protocols according to the current colour zone they are in. All stores adjusted their practices to align with the Orange-Restrict measures. St. Thomas merchants, especially the small business owners had outstanding safety measures in place. A true indicator that they care about the health and safety of their staff and customers.

Officers from the St. Thomas Police Service have completed the first week of a Body Worn Camera Pilot Project sponsored by AXON. The police service will continue to gather information for the entire 120 day pilot however preliminary data collected is very positive. So far five hundred and twenty five body cam videos have been uploaded to the AXON Secure Server. Videos range from being seconds in length to several hours depending on the nature of the interaction. Sixty thr...ee still images have been uploaded for the purpose of collecting evidence and eleven audio statements have been recorded. The AXON Evidence.com software that accompanies the body cams is very user friendly and has allowed Officers to catalogue videos and still images for evidence quickly and efficiently. Officer feed back to this point indicates that although there is a learning curve adapting to the new technology, overall the system creates efficiencies during a regular shift. The automatic transcription feature on audio statements has been particularly helpful. At this point it is anticipated that should the St. Thomas Police Service commit at the conclusion of the pilot, the organization would require thirty body worn cameras. Fifteen to be deployed while the other half upload and recharge. Preliminary estimates indicate the cost will be $40,000 per year over a five year contract with AXON totaling $200,00 at the end of 2025.
