Once upon a long time ago I had the privilege of teaching the Plastering course at BCIT, one of Canada’s best trade and tech schools. Many of my students thought that having to learn to the old outdated ways of our former masters was a stupid idea. But I sold them on the idea that this was a chance for them to to explore the limits of what skill and imagination they had. And then to draw and design something that was far beyond anything they thought could could do. To find th...e inner artist, because one day they would grow tired of what they were doing now and they would need to know how to break that cycle of boredom. This picture is my daughter standing in front of a plaster ceiling rosette that one of my Italian students had sketched, drafted, made the tools for each component, built an original plaster model by hand, and then made a rubber mold to cast them from. 16 years ago I think. I believe this was the third or fourth traditional plaster surround I did. From a sketch that the clients liked.

After thinking of a shape and making every tool needed by hand, this is how the old timers made balusters, for the ...fancy railings in palaces, cathedrals, and great houses. It was handy for those who could not afford stone or marble because a plasterer could imitate that as well. See more

Water damage repair.

I had to have a way to do a bunch of small sprayed texture matches all over a finished clean garage. Without getting it all over the place. This box idea I made last night worked better than I expected!
