ACCESS Open Minds acts as resource here at University of Alberta that connects struggling students with the appropriate mental health supports. On a national scale, ACCESS also more generally aims to improve the research and accessibility of mental health support for Canadian youth ages 11-25. Prior to the implementation of this program, a student would have first faced multiple, disconnected portals of entry when seeking help with potentially long wait lists. It was difficul...t for students to know which door to approach first; and because services were disconnected from one another, there was little continuity of care or support for students between services or (once accepted to a service) between appointments. Since the initiation of ACCESS OM, students have a clear portal of entry to contact if they need help for mental health issues, and the opportunity to meet with someone to assess their needs within 72 hours after reaching out. Through the new network, students are also able to access the mobile ACCESS team via multiple routes, or in situations where a rapid response is needed. In addition, data is also collected as new accessibility initiatives and programs are implemented. This research is then published, and can then be implemented by clinicians and policy-makers both across the country and the world, benefiting students and youth everywhere. In the era of COVID-19, the social distancing measures that have changed the way we live and work have placed many in a position where their mental health is suffering. This creates the risk that struggling students may slip through the cracks in the system as they face serious mental health crises. It is vital that students have access to adequate mental health resources, regardless of the severe government cuts to post-secondary funding, healthcare, and education in the past year. We know these are financially trying times, but for the low cost of a sticker or pin, join us in supporting a community of Canadian students who refuse to let anyone fall through the cracks. If you can't support our cause financially, we understand! Sharing this post or news of the campaign elsewhere is just as appreciated <3 www.studentsstilltogether.com #studentsstilltogether
