Right from the get-go at Studio 180 the liveness of theatre made it's presence known. As Studio 180 co-founder Mark McGrinder recalls, "It was our very first preview of the first production of The Laramie Project at Artword and, right in the middle of a deeply moving Jedadiah Schultz monologue, the fire alarm went off. I just remember Jonny Goad turning to me, eyes wide as he whispered, "what do we do?"" We plan and rehearse, but you never really know what's going to happen ...onstage on any given night and that's the magic of theatre. #IMissLiveTheatreTO Photo of the cast of The Laramie Project (Photo by John Karastamatis)

Today we are highlighting the work of Dr. Ingrid Waldron, a Canadian social scientist and associate professor of nursing at Dalhousie University and an expert on environmental racism. "There is certainly a moment happening in terms of climate change and the killing and murdering of Black people and then COVID reared its ugly head and further exposed vulnerabilities.... This is about vulnerability and how some people are exposed to some of these issues or oppressions more tha...n others. These people tend to be Indigenous, racialized and poor." - Dr. Waldron Read the rest of The Narwhal profile on Dr. Waldron here: https://thenarwhal.ca/vulnerability-ingrid-waldron-environ/ Dr. Waldron's book Theres Something in the Water focuses on environmental racism in Canada towards Black and Indigenous communities and was made into a documentary of the same name hosted by Ellen Page, available on Netflix. Studio 180 Theatre is committed to producing work that provokes public discourse and promotes community engagement. The recent and tragic deaths of Chantel Moore, Regis Korchinski-Paquet, Tony McDade, George Floyd, Jason Collins, Eishia Hudson, D'Andre Campbell, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery have intensified ongoing conversations about systemic anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism and state-sanctioned violence. As artistic leaders in Toronto, we are in a position to provi...de a platform for Black, Indigenous and POC voices, stories and artists, and we acknowledge that it is our responsibility to do so. We commit to doing better. We will contribute to a meaningful, informed and ongoing conversation about systemic racism by using our platform to amplify voices other than our own, and share resources on allyship with our audiences. In July, we will host a public, online discussion focused on privilege, allyship and how to take individual and collective action against systemic racism. We recommit to making anti-racism a fundamental part of our work and will continue to amplify diverse and underrepresented voices. Each resource that we share will be focused on a different aspect of the anti-racism conversation, starting with Vanmala Subramaniams article Before You Declare Canada is not a Racist Country, do Your Homework. https://nationalpost.com//vanmala-subramaniam-before-you-d

Its all there all through history weve been there, but we have to claim it, and identify who was in it, and articulate whats in our minds and hearts and all our creative contributions to this earth. And until we do that, and until we organize ourselves block by neighbourhood by city by state into a united visible community that fights back, were doomed. Thats how I want to be defined: as one of the men who fought the war. Larry Kramer surrogate Ned Weeks in THE NORMAL HEART. (Martin Happer and Jonathan Wilson in the Studio 180 production of THE NORMAL HEART - Photo by Karri North)

Studio 180 Theatre 29.10.2019

A giant has fallen. With the passing of Larry Kramer the world has lost a fierce, combative, passionate, brilliant, wry and dauntless crusader against injustice. As we find ourselves navigating a new pandemic its impossible not to be reminded of his fearless leadership in the face of the AIDS crisis. Kramers actions fundamentally shifted national medical policies and his rage became a rallying cry for numerous generations of artists and activists. Not surprisingly, his pl...ay, The Normal Heart, which we presented in 2011 and 2012, became a catalyst for some of the most engaging and rewarding community outreach weve ever undertaken. Epic yet intimate, the play was the essence of what we are drawn to work that humanizes issues and deepens our understanding, not only of history, but of humanity. At the time of his death, Kramer was working on a new play examining H.I.V./AIDS, Covid-19 and the decline of the human body. Its a tragedy that we wont have the opportunity to experience his artistic take on the current climate but his legacy lives on in his work and were so grateful to have had the opportunity to engage with his genius on stage. https://www.nytimes.com/2020//27/us/larry-kramer-dead.html
