The more the merrier I say! Here's to another big year in the city and in the Province!

Happy new year! BIG things are starting to happen and BROTHER we're pumped!

As the opening of our iconic Canadian National Exhibition approaches, I'd like to share a few thoughts and feelings I am experiencing at what should be a joyous... event for me. I have worked the entirety of the run of this great fair 26 of the last 27 years, missing it just once to backpack through Europe as I should have done at a much younger age. I have worked on just about every stage and type of show the wonderful entertainment department has created to dazzle the millions of patrons for whom I have given my best and total commitment. I have entered each iteration of the grand old lady excited and prepared for it's challenges of marathon hours, noise, outdoor August days(and nights), crappy equipment, rapid, under rehearsed show turnarounds, etc. I have embraced and been embraced by the friends I have made in management, support staff and performers as we formed and reformed family units over the decades. The Board of Governors of Exhibition Place, led by city councilor Mark Grimes(Etobicoke) and Mayor John Tory have crushed what I and my brothers and sisters in IATSE Local 58 have spent hundreds of lifetimes building. Our combined thousands of years of experience and 125 years of history no longer conform to their American vision of how a public trust should be managed. They do not value what is an esoteric skill-set and really have no idea what we do, safely, with dispatch and economically reasonably. Make no mistake, their claims that we will not negotiate are patently false. The cornerstone of their position is a demand that we relinquish in our contracts the jurisdiction(rights) to the work we have performed on the grounds for over 7 decades. That jurisdiction is the ONLY, truly crucial contract element that provides a shred of security to an itinerant and inherently insecure workforce. We have made no demands of any kind and have offered to submit our fate to binding arbitration in seeking a contract from a management determined to rid itself of organized labour. If you have any social conscience and commitment to keep our great nation from sliding into the dystopia that is our neighbour to the south, I beg of you; please boycott this year's Canadian National Exhibition. You will be doing yourself, organized labour and your country a great service. PS Please share publicly and often
