Hannah Höch, a German Dada artist, used photomontage to critique the Weimar German Government. Her political statements work through the lens of gender to create thought-provoking commentary on the failing government, commodification, and mass media representation of women. While her technique and context brands her as Dadaist, she was ahead of her time, going against mainstream discourses and ideas in contemporary cultural politics. The nazis labelled her work as degenerate... art - Höch was a so-called troublemaker. . As a critic of mainstream art-world misogyny, she was more than radical and failed to be recognized for her contributions to Dada for years to come. Now, we talk about Höch’s contribution to Dada in every undergrad art history 101 course. I can hear the groans and giggles of my first years when Cut with the Kitchen Knife Dada Through the Last Weimar Beer-Belly Cultural Epoch in Germany pops up on screen. Memorizing that title and bearing the flaws of the western canon itself are highly frustrating, but we persevere! . Many womxn practicing in the Dada style are still buried in history. Ana Mendieta’s work brings together the female body and the landscape in a ways that beg us to consider our own connection to the land.
