De Stijl meets Street-wear! Life imitating Art via Supreme.
Influenced by Mondrian 1965. Dress designed by the fabulous Yves Saint Laurent, Born on August 1st. Fashion after Art and Architecture. The dress pays homage to the De Stijl art movement founded in 1917 in the Netherlands and consisted of artists and architects. Proponents of De Stijl advocated pure abstraction and universality by a reduction to the essentials of form and colour. They simplified visual compositions to vertical and horizontal, using only black, white and primary colors.
How do you chose your paint colours? We are always available if you need help! These home owners in Portland, Oregon decided to utilize the ‘wisdom of crowds‘ to help them choose their next house color. Fellow residents walking by their house were greeted with a friendly lawn sign asking for help via a digital survey they could access by scanning a QR code. (image from Reddit)
Happy Canada Day! We’ve had a lot of rain lately in Vancouver so I’m throwing back to this sunset from July 2015. #vancouver #sunset #naturesbeauty #nofilter #coloursfromnature #designinspiration
Aspiring African American architect Paul Revere Williams was told, your people can’t afford you and white people won’t work with you. He renovated the Beverly Hills Hotel in 1949. The hotel's Polo Lounge still has this gorgeous wallpaper. The signage on the outside of the hotel apparently is a font that was made from Paul Williams own hand writing. Now so iconic! He persevered and became the 1st black member of the American Institute of Architects. Teaching himself how to... draw upside down so clients wouldn’t feel uncomfortable sitting next to him. He toured construction sites with hands clasped behind his back, because he wasn't sure every person would want to shake a black man's hand - and many of the neighborhoods in which his homes were located were closed to him because of his race. He eventually shaped the face of Los Angeles designing over 3,000 buildings. He attended USC School of Architecture and became the architect to the stars designing homes lived in by Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz, Lon Chaney, Barbara Stanwyck, Ava Gabor, and Charles Correll. But he still couldn’t live in the neighborhoods where his homes were placed. What a terrible burden for one of the most celebrated architects of Los Angeles. Danny Thomas was ready to move to another city when he found Williams couldn't stay at the same hotel.
Inspiring Post! "I want black and brown boys and girls to grow up in spaces that inspire them. Whether they can describe it or not, I want them to feel valued in their homes and inspiredit just may spark their own interest in creating elevated environments." https://www.fastcompany.com//interior-design-is-a-human-ri
Black Architect Paul Revere Williams wrote in his book that , "His white clients would not generally sit next to him so he learned to sketch ideas upside down." Good article on Mr. Williams and his projects. https://usmodernist.org/pwilliams.htm
I’d like to share something I read about the phrase all lives matter: All lives will not and cannot matter until all black lives matter to this society. Otherwise the statement all lives matter is false. This is why #BlackLivesMatter... Powerful artwork by @fuzzedupbear See more
On this day, May 28, 1930, the Chrysler Building opened to the public. Designed by American architect William Van Alen, it was the tallest man-made structure in the world until it lost this title when the Empire State Building was completed 11 months later.
Interesting article on Ray Eames. To the extent that the Eames style of the 1940s and 1950s was ‘progressive’ and ‘avant-garde,’ ... Ray was certainly as responsible as Charles. https://www.nytimes.com//a/ray-charles-eames-artists.html
Teacups as art. Our senior client had a teacup collection so we built a special cabinet to house them for display. Nothing formal because we wanted our clients to be able to use the teacup easily. #teacups #kitchenrenovations #sdarbutusridge #wemakeithappen #boldsimplicity #comehometoyourdream #vancouver
