Engagement Sessions! Are you wondering if it is worth it? There are a few reasons to have an engagement session, and we tell people this in every client meeting. 1. You get to know your photographer, and your photographer gets to know you, so that on wedding day, you aren't strangers! This means that your photoshoot will feel less awkward, be more fun, and as such result in more natural, and real, photos. That means when you look back on your wedding photos, or album, you... will have a better chance of seeing yourselves as you felt on your wedding day! This is especially important for people who are uncomfortable in front of the camera! Which, really, is most people. 2. Most couples don't have a lot of really nice pictures of themselves to share or post in their homes. The engagement session is an opportunity to celebrate your relationship, and express your personalities, in a different way than you can on your wedding day, usually far more relaxed and realistic. 3. At Studio Lumen we love the great outdoors. For Gillian I think that's primarily the great open skies of the prairies around her home and tending her garden, while for me (Jean-Marc) that means running to the mountains whenever possible. This past Father's day was extra special for me, with my favourite girls (wife and 2 daughters, 2.5 and .5), a trip to the mountains, a fancy cheese-based dinner, and a nice bottle of wine. I couldn't really have asked for a better day. Whi...le I didn't take photos of the cheese (wanted to eat it too fast), here are a few pictures from our hike. Living in Calgary means we can be on top of a mountain at lunch time for a summit sandwich, in one of the most famous national parks in perhaps the world, and be home for dinner in the city. I'm so glad that I can share my love for the great outdoors and everything in it with my kids.

As weather is getting better, we're moving away from video conferencing tips to something more general, since everyone will be spending more time outdoors, taking pictures of people outside. Whether it's a selfie, a picture of your kids, or your best friend drinking a beer on the deck,... knowing a few simple tricks for better outdoor light can go a long way! It's a quick video, so in case you miss the main points, here are the basics: - Avoid taking photos in the harsh mid-day sun (baaaaad shadows) - If possible put the sun behind your subject (subject is our word for model/friend/kid/person in the picture) - Take your pictures in the shade - Choose the right time of day - 'Golden Hour' is a great time for portraits. Though we can't do our traditional 'Headshots Experience Day", our clients are getting around to updating their marketing, and getting professional headshots done is often a part of that. We have considered how we can do this safely, while still offering the level of service we strive for, and have come up with some rules and techniques to let us do these in studio.
