Kingston Symphony Volunteers 26.05.2020

Today we're listening to American soul singer Isaac Hayes' second studio album, Hot Buttered Soul. Famous for his Oscar winning score for the movie Shaft (and the golden chain mail outfit he performed in at the Academy Awards in 1972), Mr. Hayes gives two incredible performances on this album; a 12 minute jazz infused 'Walk on By' and an 18 minute blues/jazz mashup of 'By the Time I get to Phoenix'. This one will no doubt make it into the Platinum Lounge at our Vinyl Records Sale.

Kingston Symphony Volunteers 14.05.2020

Today we're listening to Dion and the Belmonts: 60 Greatest hits. If you are a fan of A Teenager in Love, Runaround Sue, Lonely Teenager or any of the other great teen angst hits that these guys recorded, then this LP is for you. However, be warned; there are many songs that the word "hit" would be a misnomer. The best you can say about some of these tunes is that they are historical Dion. This LP will be available at our Vinyl Records Sale, once we set a date. For now you can listen online! Check out the Youtube playlist by clicking the link below.

Kingston Symphony Volunteers 25.04.2020

Although our CD Sale and Vinyl Records Sale had to be postponed, we can still listen to some of the great music we will have available at those sales, including the James Bond 30th Anniversary Collection. This CD has all the James Bond themes by the original artists for the past 30 years, including the opening theme that is the signature Bond opening. We particularly like Shirley Bassey's Goldfinger, as well as Carly Simon's Nobody Does it Better. Listen to this one with a vodka martini in hand, shaken not stirred.

Kingston Symphony Volunteers 13.04.2020

It's Friday and today we're listening to the soundtrack from the movie 'The Warriors'; the story of a nine person delegation from a gang called "The Warriors from Coney Island". After a turf battle between New York City street gangs, The Warriors find themselves being blamed for a murder of another gang's leader. Soon they have every gang in the city out to get revenge, and need to get back to Coney Island safely. The intro song to this movie alone, as the rival gangs get on the subway to go to meet Barry De Vorzon, is certainly worth the cost of the CD that will be available at our CD Sale in the near future. For now, you can listen to this soundtrack on YouTube, by clicking the link below.

It’s 1 p.m. on this rainy Friday, May 15. We cannot help but think of what we might have been doing today, had it not been for this incredibly disruptive virus. It is the beginning of the long weekend in May, a time to plant, to BBQ, to visit with family and friends, or to travel. For approximately 43 of us, we would be, right now, just heading off the highway in Binghamton, stopping at the Denny’s there for the first stop of the day on our way to New York City. Sometimes mu...sic can make us feel better or remind us of good times to come. We discovered this particular music compilation as part of the 16,000 CDs we will be selling someday in the future. It was as if someone put it together for just us. It is titled 'New York, New York: The City in Song', and contains many of the songs that made us desperate to visit the city. The CD includes Lena Horne’s wonderfully romantic 'Autumn in New York', Booker Ervin’s moody 'Harlem Nocturne', and the quintessential New York piece, Duke Ellington’s ‘Take the A Train’. The 14 songs on the disc are all from the pre-50s jazz that was live at clubs like the Savoy, the Cotton Club, and Minton’s Playhouse. We will try one more time to make the trip work. In the meantime, we have the music. It is not enough of course, but we’ll make do. I hope we all can send good thoughts to the New Yorkers going through some incredibly hard times. Here’s something to help with all that.

Happy Friday! Today we're listening to Gladys Night and the Pips: Ultimate Collection. Both 'Midnight Train to Georgia' and 'The Best Thing that Ever Happened to Me' are on this CD. Think about how we would all like to "go back to a simpler place and time." This is just one of the great albums that will be available for purchase at one of our sales in the foreseeable future. Have a great weekend!

Kingston Symphony Volunteers 25.02.2020

When asked why we spend so much time fundraising to support the work of the Kingston Symphony, this incredible video should explain it all!

Kingston Symphony Volunteers 21.02.2020

Although the Vinyl Records Sale and CD Sale had to be postponed, we wanted to share some of the great music that will be available for purchase at one of our sales in the foreseeable future. Today we're listening to Astrud Gilberto's 'Fly Me to the Moon'. She's one of the most relaxing singers you have ever heard. Her signature single 'The Girl from Ipanema', is not on this CD, but most of you are familiar with it in any case. This CD features the title song 'Fly Me to the Moon', as well as 'Who Can I Turn To' and 'Day by Day'. Very soft and gentle voice. Perfect for the relaxing weekend ahead.
